I am confused why can we not do this?
Discussion
Why can we not do this and clear the deficit?
"“There’s an easy way to cut the bulk of the deficit, which is you start releasing shares in RBS and Lloyds,” said in an interview with Bloomberg Television in London today. “We’ll probably make a profit at it.”"

I know we cannot flood the market, or again are they gambling on it going up more and making more cash?

That's certainly my take. Also - I think they want to remain in control of the reigns for the forseeable (or at least have influence).Jasandjules said:

because RBS market cap is about 30bn and the 'deficit' is between 1 and 2 trillion depending on what you want to include.(ps what do you mean by deficit? the budget deficit is 180bn, thats how much more labour is spending than getting in, this year. this adds to the national debt. we might be in profit on the banks we own but they are a drop in the ocean compared to the mess brown has left us in)

It wouldn't clear the deficit. It wouldn't even put a dent in it."“There’s an easy way to cut the bulk of the deficit, which is you start releasing shares in RBS and Lloyds,” said in an interview with Bloomberg Television in London today. “We’ll probably make a profit at it.”"

Most people are utterly unaware of the dire situation that we are in.
Even if the sums involved were enough, it would still be the wrong thing to do. The deficit is caused by the fact that the government has been spending more than it is raising in taxation etc. So if we got rid of the national debt but carried on spending, then we would be in exactly the same situation in a few years.

I would say it slightly differently.
"The government has been spending more than it could possibly ever raise in taxation etc."
