Common sense prevails at last, burglars beware!

Good post. This went beyond self defence or defence of property but as you say, had they believed the courts would have delt appropriately with the offender maybe they would have contented themselves with giving him a slap and detaining him. His bro remains inside, albeit with a reduced sentence.I believe we should be able to use "Reasonable Force" to defend our home and families from criminals, especially when they've tied up the family, as in this case.
The legal difficulty with this is defining "Reasonable Force."
It is my opinion that this chap went too far, but only by a bit.
In his situation, with adrenaline pumping and your family terrorised, I'm not sure I'd be able to stop until they stopped moving.
I don't condone his actions, but in his situation, I suspect I would do the same.

"His jail sentence has been replaced with a two-year suspended term."Great news. Hopefully next time he knocks a burglar for six it will be in the confines of his own home

Not just that, he at some point managed to get his brother and two other guys involved so at some point managed to take a time out whilst he called in reinforcements. That's going a bit beyond self defense.
Ah, well in that case, maybe I would draw the line before that...ShadownINja said:
Out of interest, do burglars used reasonable force when obtaining goods illegally from our homes? (Reasonable being removing nothing as removing anything from my home without my permission is not reasonable.)
Relevance? It's not reasonable, so the burglars (should) get prosecuted.obob said:
