Yard of Ale - Banned by the gubbermint
Discussion
So, it seems draconian new anti-binge drinking laws will effectively outlaw the yard of ale, for shame. This British icon has been around for hundreds of years, however due to New Labour will now be consigned to the history books.

Don't worry, the focus on supermarket bulk buy is coming soon.
Was reading a proposal from the Govt to force the breweries to charge a minimum price per unit of alcohol - the long and short of this means that the average 6-pack will cost in the region of £6-£7.
THe best bit was that if the breweries make too much money from this new proposed scheme of higher charges, the Government are going to levy charges on their profit.
You couldn't make it up - make someone charge more for their product, get more in tax that way and then take the profit the company makes too.
I really, really detest this Goverment.

Oh well, I suppose I'll just have to bring a load of red and white Kronenborg back with me whenever I go to France then. Was reading a proposal from the Govt to force the breweries to charge a minimum price per unit of alcohol - the long and short of this means that the average 6-pack will cost in the region of £6-£7.

"Pubs and clubs will have to provide free tap water to customers"
Most pubs already do, if you ask them nicely. Not in clubs though - will make a nice change.
Every club I have ever been in has offered free tap water. Most pubs already do, if you ask them nicely. Not in clubs though - will make a nice change.
ETA I think it does depend on the type of club & what recreational substances people enjoy in them.

I remember all this being talked about (almost word for word) about 10 years back when I was in to going for big nights out!
To be honest though after traveling through a lot of places around the world the English and the Aussies are the worst for not being able to control themselves around alcohol...unfortunately its another case of the terminally stupid needing protecting from themselves.

They will merely alter the duty and reclassify drinks they want to discourage as being taxed like spirits (i.e. per unit of pure alcohol in the product). They the government will get the money. Which is what they want.
