Cars hit by train in Herefordshire

Guessing by the "open mind" and more than one car hit, it might have been the crossing left open?
Wouldn't be possible to clear the signals unless the crossing was closed due to the fail safes and interlocking on the signal levers. Might have been possible to open the barriers before the train had passed though. I've worked in several signalboxes so know this can happen.FourWheelDrift said:
Or two cars from different directions both weaving around the gates (One automatic gate on one side of the road only) and driving head on into each other.
In the 2nd picture on here:http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1243758/Wo...
it looks like the barriers cover the whole width of the road.
If it's the one I remember (used to deliver to Moreton on Lugg), it's not hard to miss the crossing and the lights are pretty big warning of a train. However I do remember that locals used to jump the line because "normally it took 5 minutes for the train to pass".
Not saying that is what happened, but it would not surprise me.

Not meaning to state the obvious but on this picture the barriers are up, would they be lifted to help the emergency services or is everything left as it happened?
I've heard that the barriers were raised before the train had passed. I'm not sure about the working at MOL signalbox but at the ones I used to work you'd only have a second or two to do that if you so wished. If that is indeed the case then the signalman could be facing manslaughter charges.
I dont know if the chap i'm thinking about is still there or not, but a chap who at one time worked in that signal box used to spend half his time sending smutty emails to a woman (and I use that term loosly) who worked in the leominster signal box. The odd facts you pick up over the years eh.
