Brown knows that a tax increase on petrol means an increase in the cost of everything (as hauliers etc charge more) which inturn increases VAT revenue on everything so expect food prices too increase again too inline with this (1.50 for a loaf of bread, 70p+ for a pint of milk).

This is tax for the sake of tax he can put whatever green slant he wants on it, its all bks, where does he think our money comes from? & does he not think that the people who earn an average wage dont spend all their money every month anyway, i cant afford to save as it is, with increases like this im gonna be struggling too eat (buy food, netto here i come) and with the current job market the way it is its unlikely i will find better paid work

Does anyone actually read news articles when they're posted, or just the headline? Muppets.

I don't see what all the ranting is about. We all knew the the country was fooked at least 18 months ago and somehow we would all be paying for it. They don't want us to smoke so no extra tax income there, they don't want us to drink so no extra tax income there and they want us to drive less so they need more tax to offset the losses on motoring tax. Why the surprise and do you really think it'll be any different if anyone else gets in?

This bit caught my eye when reading the article:

tax increases in a snap post-election Budget

It was eye-catching as Meltdown and Slugbrows won't be there to do it. The other lot will raise taxes but the hope has to be that it will be less to do with ideological car hatred. The hope, that is.

Something aside from the fact that only 5p of the 15p "rise" is actually anything vaguely factual? And that 50% of said factual rise is due to VAT increasing, which has been known for over a year?

I'm surprised even the Daily Mail allowed that article through.

They all seem to hate cars, I wonder what they'll use for tax revenue if they ever kill them off totally.

According to the article, fuel will go up by 2.5p per litre when VAT returns to 17.5% but if I remember correctly, the 2.5% VAT rate cut never affected fuel prices, or did it?

Yes, they put 2p revenue on fuel to compensate for the VAT loss

The PM can’t drive, has a car and driver paid for by the state & has most of his household expenses put through on his tax free expenses, something that is shared by many other members of his odd ball government ......................... is it any wonder that they don’t understand the issues and pressures that they are forcing upon the electorate.

Cameron will have 4-5 years to convince the population that he and his government will be different, if he doesn’t achieve this, then I predict some kind of major civil unrest between 2010 and 2020......................... we will most certainly be living in interesting times

I hate to break it to you, but 1/3 of the 15p rise in that article is attributed to Cameron, so by the Daily Mail's standards (oxymoronic, I know) he's already the same.

You're assuming he gets to form a government, some recent opinion polls cast doubt on that.
