I just read this in the times... I dont get it atall... he looks like a bit of a pikey mind you...

There is no excuse and no reasoning he gives that can justify his comment atall...

Saying that the poor should steal from the rich.... no... they should go and get a job like it tells them to in the Bible!

Agreed. he sounds like someone with a dubious background that got handed church credentials and didn't bother to change his "stick it to the man" attitude that he carried with him.

I've met him! (sort of) he stands outside his church on Lawrence Street trying to convince people to come in. The church looks in disrepair and abandoned, maybe he holds a grudge?

Interesting; sounds like a personal thing using the church as a cover.

He was on Breakfast news this morning. His idea was that there may be a time in life that you're so desperate that stealing from a supermarket is your best option in a "least of all evils" sort of way. I think what he was trying to say is that we should all be ashamed that anyone ever gets to the state that such a thing is the case. Not well argued in any case.

He's not the first priest to do this.

A number of years ago there was an almost identical report-single parent, kids close to starving scenario-steal from big stores not small family ones as the conseqences deemed better that way.

The priest then had to resign from his post. Commandment number 8 got mentioned a lot by his opponents.

He may have a point and I think I can understand his underlying message. However, yes, he should improve his idea conveyance skills. wink

What? Any officer caught sniffing the saddle of the exercise bicycle in the women's gym will be discharged without trial.

Oh, hang on, that's Space Corp Directive 196156.

Wouldnt the truly Christian thing be for the vicar/priest to share his food, rather than encourage somebody to break one of the top 10 carved in stone rules?

Just realised I'm wrong, that's St Laurence Church and his is St Lawrence, which is in Tang Hall, a grotty part of York my last student digs were in, home of York's hoodlums and shoplifters.

Sounds more like he's doing his own version of the old Matthew 21:12 bit to me! wink

What? To preserve morale during long-haul missions, all male officers above the rank of First Technician must, during panto season, be ready to put on a dress and a pair of false breasts.

Oh, wait, that's Space Corp Directive 7214.

To the contrary, they should go and steal the collection box.

Thats money the rich have voluntarily given to help people in need and since it's the church's, all they have to do is say sorry and the police neednt get involved as I believe their religion's manual says being sorry cancels it all out. Simples.

What an idiot!

While you can argue there aren't enough ways people in real trouble can get help there are those that do exist and he should be making people aware of them - so that those who need help can get it and those that want to help can give it. Also perhaps he could maybe get of his arse (metaphorically speaking) and do something himself. Encouraging something forbidden by both secular law and the commandmants of his own God? Maybe it's some sort of trick question aimed at preventing the terminally stupid from getting into heaven?
