Winter Solstice... Yawn. It's bad enough, at the summer solstice. More lefty middle class (antler wearing) mumbo jumbo "LOOK AT ME" individualism.

Winter solstice... The celebration that has been around for a hell of a lot longer than Christmas itself, and the reason Christmas is when it is? That celebration?

BBC were reporting it as an upturn in popularity, and as an alternative to traditional religion - White witches, druids, and a man (looking like an accountant) wearing a casque & pair antlers, in robes, shouting about blessing of this and that, and a guy talking about nature's power and energy all around us..... I blame Lord of Rings... Aaarrgghh....

The Winter Solstice was the original celebration, not the Summer solstice.

The alignments at Stonehenge for example work at mid winter just as they do at mid summer. Digs reveal that the food eaten during festivities is consistent with a winter event.

So they've at least got the date right for their Druid revival.

The trouble is that so little is known about the original religion that anything you see in a modern ceremony is based on pure speculation.

Just let them get on with it.

Sign of the times, give the likes of Baldrick the vote and we'll be back to cavorting druids, death by stoning, and dung for dinner.

Etc...

Sounds very similar to coverage of other religious festivals - strange clothes, blessings, talking about an energy all around us - I see nothing that makes that Pagan rather than Christian (for example). Why is Paganism any more (or less!) loony than the Abrahamic religions?

Paganism was around a long time before Christianity/Islam.

Not only that, but at the kerrrrazy BBC, they also report on not just the birth of Christ, but also the quite absurd notion that he rose from the dead after being nailed to a tree, and therefore we must eat chocolate in remembrance of this.

I find it is sensible to eat chocolate all year round to make sure that I am appropriately celebrating each festival yes

It was just as much a news item as ITV's "And finally..." report on the lady who's paid out over £200,000 to take her pet dog on a round the world trip.

Maybe I'm paranoid after reading too many Climategate posts on here, but I got the feeling the whole article on the rise in practicing pagans was leading up to the 'analysis' at the end that it was due to people wanting to 'connect with' and 'heal' the earth because humans were destroying it through climate change.
