Once home to over 1,000 commercial fishing boats, as of January, home to none.

Very similar to the fishing in Cornwall, Looe, Newlyn, etc.

Too much EU bullst and not enough Spanish attitude.

Sooner we are out of this st, the better.

So the EU is giving subsidies to the frogs, dagoes and eyties to increase their fleets, so they can come into our waters, steal our fish and then sell it back to us!!! A feckin disgrace!
We should declare a unilateral 250m exclusion zone for all foreign fishing vessels..

It's alright though, this fourth generation fisherman will now be gainfully employed ferrying people to and from the wind farm that has been built.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the fishing quotas are being enacted to help preserve the cod population, which in recent years has been decimated.

What's the point of having 1,000 fishing vessels if there is no cod to fish?

The Spanish don't give a fk either way.

EU rules seem to only be obeyed by us.

The old days of the huge fleet were Herring boats. Of course you shouldn't fish stocks to the brink but small boats like his would never do that.

I'm not to clued up on these quotas. 2 questions then:
- I assume the French, Spanish and Portuguese have quotas too. are they not the same for everyone?
- If not, is it not the country's politicians to defends his/her country's best interest?

Subsidiary question: Will exclusion zone be enough kickstart the fishing industry? Fish will still have to be imported from Portugal I assume.

Yes we all have EU quotas, whilst the UK is strict and checks, the other EU member states may not be quiet as strict wink

No it's not. Some UK fishermen sold their quota rights to the Spanish.

Having the right to sell one's right wasn't necessarily the best idea, but EU fairness 'n all that!

You mean... if checks were more regular, fishermen would defend their own interests, block ports and generally make their voice heard... scratchchin Surely not ! biggrin
