I challenge you to read this and not be convinced that communism is becoming the mode du jour.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8410489.stm

I love the random figures for how much wealth is created/destroyed for each pound earned in a speculated job. Any methodology chaps? Or just another load of bullst?

They forgot to mention the amount of tax your average investment banker will give could pay the wages of several cleaners for life... what bks.

I'd really like to see about how they come about those figures!

Luckily they are a "think and DO tank".

I wonder what they have actually ever done?

The BBC don't broadcast on facts, they broadcast on socialist ideology.

Not convinced it's socialism per se, but it's certainly New Labour at the very least... nothing to be done about it, other than abolish the licence fee. Hopefully sooner rather than later smile

I actually sat on a BBC advisory panel (I think that's what it was called) a few years ago while at uni. Was bloody boring and, frankly, filled with tts. My favourite person on it, in fact, was a representative of the "travelling community". Wonderful lady smile

While I normally abhore the laziness inherent in the use of "+1", I will console myself with the thought that as OP, I can get away with it.

+1.

Agreed about nulab. Sooner not likely though.

The BBC try to hide the decline in their standards of neutrality and accuracy by claiming the political bias is a cultural bias, well it waddles and quacks like a political bias so they can call it what they like smile

From said article:
"And tax accountants damage the country by devising schemes to cut the amount of money available to the government, the research suggests.

By contrast, child minders and waste recyclers are also doing jobs that create net wealth to the country."

Is it just me or this there some kind of subtle notsowellhidden Marxist/AGW message?

Politics, culture, and philosophy... they're all the same thing... politics is applied culture, culture is applied philosophy.

Fact is Auntie is done for in the medium term. She is no longer relevant.

So we don't agree with Paul Volcker statement that the last useful thing dreamt up by the Finance industry was the ATM?

I think Lord Turner might come down on the side of the cleaners as well.

so if we made a hospital cleaner worth say 100, then a banker is worth say 10. This means rent a pillock (Mandelson) is worth .0000000000000000001 and most civil servants are worth .0001. Prince Charles and assorted parasites worth 0. So it just depends on what your starting point is and who is included in the survey.

Indeed. Given that the collapse of the world economy cost trillions of US$, how does a banker only "destroy £7 of value for every £1 they earn"? By contrast, how do advertisement executives "destroy £11 of value for every pound in value they generate"?

THis has got me thinking about other jobs very carefully. I suspect that I destroy 50 trillion for every pound I generate. I dont know why, I have no hypothesis or methodology, but it sounds dramatic, so I will go with it.

Its not a "think tank", its a "think and DO tank". Christ. There's a massive difference.
