So, climate change has been shown to be a swindle. So what now?

That's right, acidification of the oceans.

What utter fking nonsense.

What will they think of next?

I have to say though, some people are complete retards. A chap who lives down our road used to own an immaculate MK2 Golf GTi and a very tidy MK3 Golf VR6. He sold both of them and went and bought a couple of Smart Forfours so as he could do his bit for the environment.

By his own admission he used to be abit of a car nut but now I get the odd stty comment about how many cars we own and he mumbles about the environment whenever I'm outside looking at my car but whenever he's challenged he always passes it off as a joke.

He also won 'Green Household of the Year' in our local council magazine.

Don't know if it's non-sense personally. Perhaps a chemist could clarify?

If the atmospheric CO2 levels are rising it stands to reason that the ocean would act as a sink and increase it's HCO3- content. Which is acidic.

It's been a while since I've done any marine biology but I do recall a lot of oceanic life is quite sensitive so it stands to reason that it would struggle to adapt.

Whether it's a big deal or not remains speculation of course.

Given the amount of rubbish that gets dumped in the sea every single day, I very much doubt that CO2 will make any difference.

I think it may be a ploy to keep the general population on their toes:

Berlin wall came down, ending the threat of cold war. What can replace the threat? well.........

Aids was going to kill everyone-it didnt, it killed kenny everett and frrrreddddieeee merc ur ee
The millenium bug was due to destroy anything with a chip in it- planes were due to fall out of the sky, life support machines would turn themselves off- in the actual event the only thing that crashed was Desmond Llewellyn.
Sars was due to wipe out mankind.
The bird flu was a 'major pandemic' and was to stop life as we know it- in fact killing only a swan in norfolk.
Global warming-as it was- would slowly cook us all to death. It didnt, it got wetter.

Now, 'climate change' is a load of balls, so its best we invent something else for the doom-mongers to harp on about until they find the next thing to worry about.

My money is on an asteroid collision, huge tidal wave, volcano erruption, or more sinister, the resurrection of little and large.

Think of it in terms of scale and locality though.

We're talking Giga tonnes here spread throughout the entire oceans, far far more than the odd cargo ship full of crude oil or toxic waste contained with a hundred mile radius.

Not saying it's true or anything. I just wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it.

How does acidity rise by "a third" or "120%"? In what way does that relate to the pH scale?

Climate change hasn't been shown to be a swindle.
Just some scientists not sure how to interpret the latest data
The earth is warming up
What is the root cause can still, just be argued

However, most scientists / countries are pursuing the wrong approach to deal with it, with ridiculous schemes such as wind power / wave power etc. Still need a nice big Nuclear / coal fired power station as a backup to when there is not enough / too much wind etc.

Need to start investing in carbon capture techniques, whilst we investigate viable low cost sources of energy for when the black gold runs out

Look at the Darwin Zero smoking gun.

If that sort of 'homogenizing' has been applied to the raw data, your comment that 'the earth is warming up' has no basis in fact.

I therefore call swindle.

There is no proof that the glogal climate is warming, let alon that it has anything to do with CO2 let alone anything to do with man.

Hi G_T ever heard of "buffered" solutions? I'd suspect the Oceans are quite capable of resisting pH changes for a long while yet.

Is this the same CO2 that’s been filtered through the oceans by natural means (underwater volcanic eruptions for example) for millions of years?

Given that we all know that at various points in the earth’s history, CO2 levels have been far far higher than they are now and yet the sea isn’t a bubbling vat of acid, I’d suggest that there is little cause for further taxation alarm.

Yeah, I remember pka calcs from college. But if memory serves the buffering only only reduces the effect to a point.

I'm not saying it's certain or anything I'm saying at a glance it doesn't seem that ridiculous to me.

The sheer volume of CO2 that needs to be dissolved in the oceans to cause a noticable change in acidity is mind boggling. The fact that the CO2 we are worried about is in a gaseous form in the atmosphere makes it even harder to dissolve compared to actually taking the solid form and chucking it all in the ocean.

I think I'll take the skeptical view...

What utter fking nonsense.
This is nothing new, as the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased and the Oceans have become more acidic. This has been well understood for a long time and does pose a genuine threat to marine ecosystems if CO2 levels and ocean acidity levels keep on rising.
