A pearl of wisdom from the Wail. Don't expose your children to Thomas the Tank Engine. He's right wing, too conservative and he utterly HATES women.

Professor Wilton was also critical that only eight of the 49 characters in the shows she analysed were female.

The majority are coal fired locomotive units and rolling stock!

If the South Park team made this show they'd retaliate by putting a bunch of female tankers carrying 'Gentleman's Mayonnaise' or something like that.

It's what I would do.

"Professor Wilton, from the department of political sciences at Alberta University, Canada..."

When Canada is dead and gone, there'll be no more Celine Dion....or Professor Shauna Wilton.

professor? So she supervises other peoples PHDs in fkwittery? Hmmm this is why they have people like Begg etc. I just give in. Bill Awdrey gave millions to good causes from the books and afaik his son still does. The tallyllyn would not exist if not for him and his books give great fun to kids to this day. I think this woman should be shot, I can see no good reason for her continued existance.

Maybe this woman should take a long look at herself when trying to work out why men treat women poorly in society.

Reading that story just makes me subconciously think "Women = Idiots"

Besides, theres no reason for mysogyny to exist. No man - or tank engine - could hate women more than they hate each other.

Well...she won't get a career out of her looks so she had to find something.

rofl

Now there's a surprise!

Has there ever been such a thing as an attractive militant feminist?

How odd.

I've always seen the Island of Sodor as some sort of socialist distopia, with the fact controller acting as some sort of commisar, brainwashing all the engines into some communist group-think, competing against each other to be the most "useful".... the scrappage yard take the hindmost

She is however, basically correct, but what's the big surprise? Surely she's just stating the bleedin' obvious!

The books are a product of their time. It is the class system from the forties and fifties to a 'T', whether it be about gender, the pecking order in the workplace or just knowing your place in society.

"We tend to think of children's TV shows as neutral and safe, but they still carry messages.

Eventually these children will attain full political citizenship, and the opinions and world outlook they develop now, partially influencedby shows like Thomas, are part of that process."

Okay then Professor Piss-flaps. Now why don't you run along and make us all a nice cup o' tea?
