On Sky so surprised its not popped up here....anyway, the above is a FAR better recording as you hear the dispatcher tell (in as many words) the home owner to defend herself with her shotgun - so she does.

No doubt the US has a gun problem....but this seemed a pretty good use for one!

Blimey, that's quite a recording!

Must be really bloody horrible to have to kill someone, but can't say I disagree much with the final outcome.

"Is advising that you can defend your property if you need to".

Sweeeet. Personally, I'd have probably gone for a warning shot to the leg or something, but can't say I blame the lady for going for the kill. Still must be a horrible feeling though.

Compare the outcome if you were to do the same thing over here.

Self defense is one thing, but it's easy enough to disable someone with a shotgun without killing them. Do you think he would have continued his burgling after a shell to the knee? Also, if he was at the back door, why wouldn't she have gone out the front door. I know you have the right to defend your property, but if she's as scared and unwilling to use deadly force as she claims in the 911 call, then why not ps off out of there and wait for the police? This doesn't add up.

She is also extremely lucky, in the vast majority of cases that shotgun would have ended up getting used on her.

Member of public in sharp shooting with shotgun lark. Buy your tickets here to see her shoot peanuts from your nose and straws from your ears.

Airbag, you are a muppet.

Well exactly. Tony Martin was it?

Well done to her as far as I'm concerned.

Step 1 phone the cops.
Step 2 when they can't help you, protect yourself with all the force at your disposal.

None of this UK "reasonable force" bks. Any force you have at your disposal.

Wound them and you are open to more reprisals from seedy lawyers and the scum's friends. You are wrong, the vast majority of times the weapon is not turned on the homeowner, it is used as it was here. Where do you get this stuff?

How so? How is aiming for the lower body sharpshooting?

Why the need for personal insults?
Do you think that killing this man was the only reasonable course of action?

The last set of stats on gun crime in the US I looked at suggested weapons kept in the home (ostensibly for self defense) ended up being used on the homeowner far more often than the criminal invading the home. I'm afraid I don't have a link handy, sorry Jim.

Really? I can't listen to that video, what make and model of shotgun was she using? What ammunition type?

How many shotguns have you fired in order to disable a burglar?

Personally, I think she did well and ought to be congratulated.

I recognize that there is much speculation in my statement, but do all the facts of this seem a bit strange to anyone else?

What?

How would it end up getting used on her? You watch the door, wait for the intruder, and shoot him. I think you're getting confused with the notion that the homeowner might hand the gun to the intruder, and ask him to shoot himself.

Anything other than killing leaves you vulnerable to the fact that the intruder may have a gun, and as Jimbeaux pointed out, legal ramifications. As for leaving out of the front door. This is her house. Not his. He deserved to die.

You tit.

That's why shooting him in the middle sooner rather than later is the Right Thing.

We should have the same absolute right to defend our property here.

Nobody deserves to die, that he was committing a crime is beyond dispute, but that doesn't mean he deserves a death sentence.
Again, are personal insults really warranted here?

No, not really. The heading on the video states the intruder's name and the he was high on drugs; perhaps a known local element. Nothing really strange about it.
