We've been with EDF since we moved into a new build 2 years ago, and paid by direct debit from day one. We check the meter readings and make sure that they are up to date and correct, so that we are in balance at the end of every year.

We got a letter today from EDF apologising that due to an error on their part, they hadn't been charging us the right rates from the date we moved in, adn they were going to back-date the (substantially higher) rates for the last twelve months, amending our current bill accordingly.

Do they have any legal right to do this - we agreed a rate with them when we moved in (which has changed over the last two years anyway, as it wasn't a fixed rate deal), we've always paid on time, always made sure the readings are right etc..., now they want to charge us a different amount because of a mistake they have made?

Provided you've sent them the correct meter readings, and provided you still have the original paperwork from them, which would tally correctly with the bills you have, I don't see how they can ask for more money.

I mean, they ask for x as stipulated in the contract, you pay x, now they want y? Er, no.

I sell you a car (motoring website), you keep it for a year and I then contact you to say I priced it incorrectly. I now want more money!

Does this sound like the norm?

It's a fecker isn't it? Had it happen to me before when I got my first rental place.

They take the piss all the time, and xx% of people will stand for it, therefore it's worth their while.
They have the audacity to charge you up front for more than you've used, then say "ah no actually, we f*cked up. and we want more....lots more"

But fear not, because privatisation of the utlilties was a wonderful thing which liberated us from the tyranny of a state run monopoly and made life so much simpler and cheaper.

Refer the matter to their ombudsman for an investigation, and tell them you won't be paying anything until an investigation is complete.. That will at least buy you time I hope.

From what I can see, they sent us a list of tariffs priced per area, and it looks as though they've charged us for the Eastern area, rather than the midlands, but I cant see anywhere that defines what actual tariff we should be on.

For the mo I'm just going not pay anymore and use the complaints / watchdog route until we get to the bottom of it, one way or another.
