Mandy's going to be the next "minister of information" to "sell" the governments ideas to the masses.

Ministry of Love?
Ministry of Truth?
Ministry of peace?
Ministry of Justice?

Wait a minute that last one's real.

Is no one else really quite deeply disturbed by where the last 10 years have taken us?

Largest number of CCTV systems in the world
Govnt now tracks every single email, web link and phone call
Disengagement of populace from the tenants of democracy
Unelected Prime Minister
Inability to protest peacfully in front of the houses of parliament
Lack of parliamentary accountability and honesty

Edmund Burke:
All that is necessary for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing
am i the only person deeply scared by what is going on at the moment? Am i the only person who feels utterly powerless?

For 30 years i wondered how civil wars start and how stupid the protagonists were. In the last 12 months i have finally understood their motives.

I too feel the same; I like to think it is the lashing out of a dying animal, but with everything in place now, to be ruled by ‘Quasi-Communist politiko’s’ from Brussels, a change of government in this country won’t make much of a difference – I strongly suspect the likes of Mandleson know this.

Does any of it actually directly affect YOU though?

I guess not - otherwise you'd be too busy protesting, rather than taking time out of your daily routine to rant on a motoring forum wink

Despite what you might think...we are all an awful lot better off than our forefathers many of whom spent most of their lives down the pits or working the land etc etc.

I would concentrate of enjoying your life, because you aren't really affected or bothered at all - are you?

Doyou enjoy being entirely patronising?

having grown up working the land. i'd rather have to work from sun up to sun down and have personal freedom, than the current situation where there is no work, and no personal freedom. Its erroneuous to beleive that we all enjoy a lifestyle which is far more rewarding than it ever has been in the past- archeology just doesn't show that statement to be true.

having lost my job 6 months ago after the company i worked for was totally screwed by the credit crunch i am now angry that there are almost no other jobs around. I'm even more annoyed that the job i had lined up to start in October (to retrain as an air traffic controller) has now been pushed back to start in May- guess why? yep because of the credit crunch. Have lost my house, my job, my fiancee all in the same year so no guess i'm not bothered or affected.

like many of my contemporaries I was bought up not to complain, but just get on with things and accept that life is difficult.

You tt.

Just how can one 'enjoy' one's life, when in my (relatively short so far of 37 years) life, so much has changed? I remember when the Government only took 55p or so a litre in revenue out of petrol. In fact I can remember when petrol was sold by the gallon. I can remember when we weren't continually bombarded on TV by propaganda about global warming/climate change. When we didn't have every single job you do risk assessed. When you could drive a large engined car without being sneered at for not 'being green' or having a large 'carbon footprint'. When your bin was collected weekly and you didn't have to put rubbish into 4 different containers. When politicians didn't claim expenses because they got very little in the way of extras. Oh, and lets not forget.......

When we were a Soveriegn Nation in charge of itself and we had a PM who was ELECTED to office by the General Public.

Whats not to like about the European State of Britain, 2009?

That argument is pointless.

There will always be people far worse off than us

There will always be people far better off that us.

The important thing is to fight for what we have previously had at a minimum, and work to make sure things get better than we had previously, personally and economically.

It may well be that there is someone in another country living in a wooden shack, and they should be doing the same thing. It is all relative.

Given the number of Indian Billionaires / Millionaires who could do more to help instead of spending their money on yachts, sports teams & luxury car manufacturers, I'm perfectly happy knowing that the people sleeping on the streets of India are absolutley nothing to do with me.

I haven't seen the figures...but CCTV really doesn't bother me and I don't think it should bother you. If you broke down on the Mway it's comforting to know you may be seen on CCTV and help may get to you sooner. If you got mugged in the street you'd hope the perps were caught on CCTV no?
Govnt now tracks every single email, web link and phone call
If it helps the police infiltrate criminal gangs and paedos?...Do you do stuff on the web or make suspect phone calls? If not I suspect you have nothing to fear here.
Disengagement of populace from the tenants of democracy
I understand the words...?
Unelected Prime Minister
Do you really think it would be any different if Blair was still in charge? With an election looming...do you really think things will change?
Inability to protest peacfully in front of the houses of parliament
I've never really felt the need to protest - but I can see that being annoying for you as a protester who used to protest in front of the HoP.
Lack of parliamentary accountability and honesty
Have you ever actually made an appointment with your local MP? I have...he's now the speaker of the House and he's a throuroughty nice, decent hard working guy...don't let a few bad apples tar your judgement.

are you really so foolish to implicitly trust anyone (read just about any civil servant) who can access this data. Do you not think that just occasionally it wil get used for personal gain, and there will be nothing you can do. Would you be happy if i followed you everywhere? if you would then you are a bit weird, and if you wouldn't then why is it ok to follow you everwhere with CCTV?

What happens when the government does something in the future that you REALLY don't like- for example deciding that all Jewish people are subversive and should be shot? they will have mechanism to achieve a goal like this very quickly? please don't tell me its unrealistic as that is an entirely fatuous or naieve argument.

If i break down on the motorway then i will call the AA/RAC- why the hell would i need CCTV tracking my vehicle everywhere?

well seeing as MOST peado's are family members, why doesn't the Government spend less time on tracking our email/calls and more time teaching people to be more responsible and make their own informed judgment about people- and not blame the rest of the country if that judgment is wrong?

The real problem is that most people who have nefarious purposes can get around call tracing, email tracing and web tracing and it’s the rest of us who are tarred as “criminals” that need following all the time.
Dr.Doofenshmirtz said:

And yet don’t understand the meaning? Either through design or by accident, the population no longer sees the value in democracy- this could lead to a very dangerous outcome if we aren’t careful.
Dr.Doofenshmirtz said:

No it won’t make any difference and that’s what scares me the most.

And what happens when you do feel the need to protest and aren’t allowed to? Do you just give up, or do you break the law and protest illegally, even though free speech is supposed to be a freedom we enjoy?

I know my local MP very very well, and I didn’t vote for him!

If you think that there are just 1 or 2 bad apples then you haven’t been reading the news properly- a large % see their jobs as gravy trains.

We are NOT here to serve the government, but the other way round- governments should be scared of populace's NOT the other way round.

Except for the one occasion where I (and my solicitor) have felt the need to ask for a copy of the tapes, can you guess what the reply was..............I'll give you a clue, no was part of the answer.
Please dont forget the incidents of people being spied on for non criminal activity (peeping into people’s bedrooms for example)

Already been defeated by people on here with the aid of simple encryption techniques, if somebody has the money and connections to get hold of explosives and guns, they can also get hold of encryption devices, only an idiot would think otherwise.

You’re having a chuckle with that one aren’t you? Free speech / democracy are not something that should be removed from any person irrespective of their point of view.

Not massively, blair is a lying cheating war criminal; he was also a far better statesman than winky (which really doesn’t say much for winky)

If I want to protest outside the palace of Westminster, I should be able to, we have a statue of a well known terrorist outside, yet I can’t protest against the government!

Yes, and I've also met him several times socially. When labour introduced IR35 he justified it by telling me it would prevent me from fiddling my expenses / taxes, quite ironically Ben Chapman was one of the MP's claiming for interest payments on a mortgage he didn’t actually have!
I've found him to be completely uninterested in local affairs unless there's a quick win and a photo op in it for him.
I've also met your MP a number of times and have to say that either he's changed dramatically in the past 3 years or you’re a very very poor judge of character.

Out of the dozen or so MP’s I’ve met and spoken to at any length, the only ones I felt had any semblance of interest in their constituency were David Hunt (former conservative for Wirral) and Frank Field (labour mp for Birkenhead)

I'm just trying to gauge exactly how much people are really bothered...
It's all very well telling everybody on a motoring forum how terrible things have become - but what exactly are you going to do about it?

From what has been said here...I can only assume some people must live in a permanent state of rage, wear tin foil hats, and only go out under the cover of darkness?

Or do you just get on with your life and leave the real protesting to those great unwashed people you see on the TV? cos erm, that's what I do and I bet 99% of other readers are no different. ETA - the reason for this is because I have nothing really to protest about, and I know there is no current alternative to how our country is run.

Many of us have been bought up with "stiff upper lip" syndrome- don't complain, just put up with it.

From my experience there is a LOT of simmering resentment at the moment- people don't feel that complaining will do anything thoug - so nothing will be said and then it will explode from the middle classes.

What you've basically said is 'If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear' then you are either an employee of the government/government agency or a halfwit. What private individuals who have nothing to hide such as myself do with their lives is MY business, not the business of the government or government agencies. If you really believe that terrorist gang and peados will be reduced and infiltrated by these measures and it's not just another method of snoopng on the population that you really are a fool.

If you have nothing to hide you have the right to live your life in privacy away from these government criminals. People need to wake up.
