You are not even safe in your own home from the thieving of NuLab and their councils through the extension of Proceeds of Crime Act. Even the police are worried about this because now TfL and other gangsters can block your bank accounts, sieze property etc WITHOUT a court case.. read more here

Time to ensure that NuLab NEVER EVER come back!!!

Unbelieveable.
How are laws like this forced through with seemingly no public debate or any warning untill it is too late?
How can we get this bunch of pricks out of power? Must we wait untill the election next year?

OK so let's see CMD step up to a microphone today and promise that a Tory government will reverse it.

He won't.

It's part of the same rank incompetence visible in the safety deposit box raid coverage as per the thread on PH. 'The government has set a target' - that's the intro to a whole circus of incompetence, f--kups, and shedloads of misery for ordinary law-abiding citizens.

Ministers set a target to recover £250 million in criminal assets by 2010, rising to £1 billion per year soon after.
Article said:
The memo adds that asset seizure will result in financial rewards: “Investigation bodies will receive a share of money recovered as additional funding to incentivise further work in recovering the proceeds of crime.”
It's the "self-funding" camera partnerships all over again...

A reply that amused me smile

"This sounds like a panic measure introduced in haste. These tactics would be more suitable in a middle eastern dictatorship. Perhaps the Americans will be forced to attack us." biggrin

It really is unbelieveable isn't it?

Especially the first step being freezing assets and presumption of guilt, plus authority to eneter, search and sieze cash up to £1000.

Can they not see the unintended consequences of this?

We have seen the petty ways in which TfL enforcers and credit control depts work as just one example.
At the moment they have the power to be quite bloddy irritating but with this they would have the power to completely screw up somebodies life in rather short order.

But then this is New Labour, if the laws don't suit then wrangle and wriggle your way into getting the law changed to what you want, regardless of fairness, justice etc.

They really are on a slash and burn mission aren't they?

This sounds far worse than any previous powers that councils have been able to misuse, given the propensity of local authorities to resort to fines & court cases for even the most minor and petty reasons, this looks like the beginning of the end for society as we know it.
From reading the times article and then searching out more information on the POCA extensions, it would seem that as long as the council can prove after the fact that there were grounds for the seizure, they can go ahead and do what they like.

I’ve worked for local government and witnessed the incompetence first hand (admittedly a number of years ago) to trust those people with this sort of power is without doubt one of the scariest things that labour have done in the past 12 years.

There was a thread on here a few months ago where somebody’s elderly father was taken to court for late payment of council tax (IIRC, it got to court and the council were berated by the judge/magistrate for wasting time and an overtly vexatious action) thanks to comrade Johnson we now have the situation where in this case the council wouldn’t have needed to go to court to prove they had a case, they could simply arrive on your doorstep, kick the door down and remove the contents of your house / bank account / garage etc . . . . . . . . . . . . . and yet they have the nerve to call Griffin a fascist!

We really do need to have a national slap the fk out of anybody who voted labour day

Is this also going to apply to the MPs that have not paid the monies owed yet... but promised?

technically they are in breach of the orders so can they have their accounts seized too?

Like I said earlier, let Cameron come forward today and denounce it and promise to reverse it. Give us some "clear blue water".

I think a lot of people are going to get a shock when the Tories come in and all this repressive legislation stays on the books, along with the 50% tax rate that induced such a blood spitting reaction and, in all probability, the Lisbon treaty.

Completely agree, I’ve just emailed messrs Cameron, Clegg, Griffin & Esther McVey (conservative candidate for my area at the next election) asking for their position on this, very sad to say but the only person I can see responding positively is Griffin .

How much Expenses where claimed by the ministers? why do they need to set a target, why not just aim to get the maximum ammount possible from each conviction?

I've also emailed Cameron. Perhaps if enough people do he will speak out..

The truly horrifying thing is that this legislation doesn’t need a conviction for the powers to be used.

It's simply a matter of a council bod making a case internally for seizure of your goods followed by a council appointed bailiff turning up at your house or petitioning your bank to freeze your assets, no arguments, no legal hearings, no justice and no acountability needed.

Given the startlingly terrible judgement and misuses of the surveillance laws shown by local authorities (bin police etc) you’d have to be terminally insane to come up with this law

At some point in the last 18 months, they slipped in through a bill meaning they could change any law they like without it having to see debate in parliment. It was flown in under the radar while some other superficial media driven hysteria was driving people mad, and no-one spotted it, and no-one opposed it, not even here on PH.

When stuff like that goes un-noticed here, you know we are losing the battle.
