So in essence you are to monitored on your power usage and if the state/power company decides you have had your fridge on too long it will turn it off remotely.

Time to investigate home generators?

Great, so my computer is on all day, they decide that I am using it too much and switch it off, which then means that I can't work and they don't get paid, yep I can see how well this is going to go down.

It seems we continue down the path to a new East Germany, despite the fact that when the wall came down everyone who could leave, did so.

Genius idea, someone working from home as championed by the government could have their computer turned off remotely loosing a day's work time for CHP boiler and a UPS for the computer and router. Assuming the fking stupid idea ever gets taken up, there are lots of odd meter set ups etc out there, economy 7, economy 12 etc.

Power companies already do spy on you. If you use too much electric they suspect you're growing weed and report you to the police.

[quotemart meters could become a 'spy in the home' by allowing social workers and health authorities to monitor households
[/quote]what could power usage possibly have to do with these Stasi agents?

I pay for the electric I use and until such time as someone else pays then I (as an adult) will decide my usage.

If I want to cool the room in summer by leaving the fridge door open then i will, If I choose to turn all the lights (old style, not thoses headache inducing EU ones) and ream the central heating up to "tropical" then guess what, i fking well will.

I decide if i want 8000 watts of spotlamps in my gaff, and I decide if I want to boil 30 kettles at the same time for sts and giggles.

I PAY.

Suck my balls you control freak fkers.

Maximise your own energy consumption, so that no-one can steal it before you.

I am going to invest in a big electro magnet and an AC to DC converter, one that burns huge amounts of power, then once it is operating i will put it next to the new spy-meter and see what happens.

OK, next doors cutlery *might* stick to their wall, and if anyone has a pacemaker there might be trouble but i want to see if the meter can cope with massive usage and massive magnetic fields, I think it might need replacing quite a lot in my house.

I'd love to know how a smart meter could possibly guess or understand exactly what was plugged into the mains in a household. All it can monitor is the total load, nothing more.

Watch the changes; size and timings. That would be enough, for a clever man.

But the meter will not be able to discern the difference between, say, the pump on a central heating boiler, and a radio. Or an electric bar heater, and a toaster, or an iron. And there is absolutely no way whatsoever that such a device could ever remotely disconnect anything in your home.

Sounds like a lot of scaremongering nonsense to me, as usual.

The meter won't be doing anything of the kind. But, an analysis of usage could have a bloody good stab at what was coming on/off and when. Dangle a big enough purse in front of the electricity companies, and they would find a way.

Remember, those rubber tubes across the road are there to count cars. But you can use the data to determine speed, if you'll accept a bit of heuristics...

There is certainly a lot of that about. The endless worrying proposals and possibilities are no doubt used by our politicians, just as they use 'good days to bury bad news'.

It doesnt need to know what you are using, it will tell on you if you use too much.

It wont come in as a monitoring device at first it will come in as a money saving device, "just think of the money you could save" then it will gradually morph into a device to stop anyone having more than the alotted amount per day, fail to comply will result in......

Fines.

plus as a side effect they can see who is on PH all night and who among us could be taxed more, well if they can afford to spend THAT on electric we could have some more in tax.

Yes, but switch it off first unless the heater matrix is totally vented outside the house, like an aircon unit.
