Are women equal or not?

Can anyone explain to me why the age for men and women to receive state pension should not be the same.NOW.
Equality doesn't work like that, obviously. Equality really means "equality where women were originally worse off". Anywhere where they are already better off is conveniently ignored. Mrs Trackside said:

I would like to know. Especially as they get to take off much more time from work due to maternity leave and "womens problems".
When men can have babies I'm sure this will be levelled out Good point though OP. Do women also get their free bus passes earlier too?

Never really understood why the ages differ. Surely it's about time they were brought into line with each other.
They are being brought in line, but it's being phased in - womens retirement age is scheduled to raise 1 year every other year (eg to go to 61 next year, 62 in 2012, etc...Tad harsh to bring it in all in one go ... telling poor Doris who was expecting to retire tomorrow that she's now got to work an extra 6 years for the pension she was always promised on her 60th
In order to qualify for a full basic State Pension I will need to work until I am 67 and have built up 30 years of National Insurance payments http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DG_40...
