Well it sounded like a great idea, but listening to Vince Cable this morning it apparently means (in his own words):

"Cutting taxes for people at the bottom...and the very well off people will have to pay for that"

Now, can someone explain how this is fair? Given tax is calculated largely on a percentage of income, the well-off are already paying significantly more than the poor, yet are more unlikely to use public services.

More politics of envy...

Should be a flat rate percentage tax for everyone, ie you pay 20% whether you earn £500million or £5000, I don't see why the harder you work the higher the percentage of your earnings go to government.

Agreed, and such measures would actually stimulate entrepreneurialism in this Country.

I think it was in reference to Council tax which could be seen to be unfair when you reach the top bracket.

It's the Lib Dems.

In terms of Parliamentary government, they've got about as much policy-forming clout as the Monster Raving Loonies.

Vince could stand up and say that all rich people have to give 99% of their income and a kidney to the state, and it'd be about as likely to happen.

One of the cool things about having no hope whatsoever of achieving real political power is that you can say anything you like, because you'll never, ever have to put your fiscals where your fillings are.

I totally agree with you.

The government, on the other hand, will take the view that you're less likely to cause riot & revolution because you can only afford 2 Astons.

Not really. Why should a health authority CEO earn six times more than a nurse, or a nurse earn two times more than a mental health worker? (I have family members in all 3 of those jobs).

A single flat rate consumption tax is even fairer. Income related taxation discourages investment and saving.

What happened to the LibDem idea of local income tax instead of the "unfair council tax"?

I don't know about that - I've found that the higher I've progressed up the promotion ladder the less actual work I do, for more money. And by 'work' I mean grime under the fingernails work as opposed to sitting at a desk and getting others to do the heavy lifting wink

Not that I'm complaining though!

That's a different problem; the pay rates are seemingly wrong there.

Some people definately deserve to be better off than others though. There are people that have worked their asses off building successful businesses, i on the other hand haven't. Do you really think i should be just as well off as them?

Used as the title for Brown's 2005 or 2006 Budget (camn't rememeber the exact year). The official Budget handout was titled "Towards a Fairer Tax System".

A fairer tax system would get rid of National Insurance, a tax in every sense but name and a tax on jobs.

A fairer system shouldn't penalise those who've worked hard to get where they are and reward those who can't be bothered to get on.

+1 on a flat rate for me.

I rarely want to stand up and help those who are rich, But it's just another tax on the people who have worked hard and bettered themselves (granted, there are people who inherit large houses and family fortunes) but I find it really discourageing to go out and work hard and to get a good job when all that will happen is you will have more taken away to fund the giant plasma TV's sitting in the council houses. mad
