Fawkes et al are pushing this for all it's worth

The Attorney General, Baroness Scotland, employeed an illegal worker from Tonga who outstayed her visa in the UK (by 5 years)

According to the law (Asylum and Immigration Act 1996), the only valid defence to this is for the employer to provide proof (as the original, or a copy) of seeing whichever document allowed the employee to work in the UK. At the moment it's unclear whether these copies were ever made.

So, if the chief legal adviser to the Government is proved not to have kept to the law (and seems to be liable to a £5000 fine) shouldn't they resign? What happens to a solicitor/barrister convicted of a criminal offence? I note that Gordon Brown has already rushed in to give her his "full confidence"..

Also, I'm surprised that there was no MI5 vetting of an employee of the Attorney General, that doesn't say a lot for their security checks. After all, I thought all foreign nationals working in the UK were now supposed to have the infallible ID Card.

Because tax and NI numbers are given to illegal immigrants. The Revenue are not that concerned about the status of an individual as long as they are getting their rightful tax and NI amounts.

In fact, the Treasury has gone on record saying that they would prefer to have an illegal on the NI registry so that they can at least have some sort of handle on the individual's existence. otherwise they disappear off the radar completely.

Having said that, an employer is still legally obliged to ensure that none of their staff are illegals and, for the reasons mentioned above, claiming they thought the individual was legal because they had a valid NI number holds no water with the authorities.

I don't see the issue. (I see the issue in having an ILLEGAL employee)

A busy socialist should spend all hours there are in the day Fixing the country, and if that means employing staff then the least they can do is to do it right.

Never heard if her and I didn't realise Scotland was her surname. I thought it was just another comedy title like Lord Adonis.

I hope Cameron is saving all of these up as ammunition for the election as hard as it must be to let it all out now.

Yes I know Adonis is his surname as well, I just find it funny

When we break the law we are charged and hauled before the court. When our leaders break the law they earn the Prime Minister's 'fulll confidence" once they apologise for an "administrative error".

Hang the lot of them

Really struggle with "rightful" ever prefixing the word tax in this country.

Some people think that NO tax is rightful. But that's another debate.

Being socialist doesn't make you immune to being corrupt... or ginger and rubbish either in his case. The fact that he was one of the commissioners who decided there was no case to answer after the first of the accountancy whisleblowers got shafted just makes it more irritating. All things considered, the Labour party should have picked Healey instead of the Welsh windbag.

Indeed.

Chief legal advisor to the crown found to be in breach of a law that they were instrumental in pushing through.
If she doesn't resign, Gordan has to sack her. That would involve finding some balls however...
