Peasants are revolting in Leeds at the moment - bin men on strike.

Understandable really, as it is such a unique, highly skilled profession that I can see how they must have leverage. I expect none of the swathes of recently unemployed could drive a truck and wheel bins around.

But, I digress. My post refers to the illiterate union rep interviewed just now on BBC Look North:

thick Tony Pearson from Unison said:
...all these workers are fighting for is dignity and a fair day's wage for a fair day's pay...
fking useless tt. He can't even get a simple sound bite right.

following on, just watching Jim Knight MP squirming, trying to explain that a 3.4% public sector pay increase vs 1.2% private sector increase doesn't count because public sector workers are lowly paid.

Oh, hang on. Billy Hays is on - another union tt.

You'd be surprised how many people would still turn their noses up at being a refuse collection engineer.

Was that the same Union idiot that was on Newsnight?

I am really starting to believe that Union leaders are the biggest s in the whole country, complete and utter wkers.

The best bit was the union leader saying that they wanted to 'modernise' the Royal Mail yet I read last week that they were balloting for a strike to stop possible job cuts caused by Autonomisation and modernisation of the sorting offices.

You couldn't make this st up.

The bins are striking over pay,all manual council jobs are now paid for the work you do.Tye driver of the bin lorry will get paid for a full shift because he is driving to the houses and also inbetweent the houses. The men who load the bins won't get paid for the time driving to the houses because they are not doing their work at that time, the driver is.This system is already in place,it could get a lot more support
I don't work for the council, just what I picked up from doing deliveries

And what makes you think he got it wrong ?
all he is asking for is to get paid for being paid,(no mention of the dreaded WORK word )
nothing wrong with that.laugh

Now we are just waiting for this system to be ported to other council workers, the wage bill should drop by 90%.

Actual facts. The reason that they are pissed off is that the council have regraded the jobs for Sex equality purposes. This has meant some workers have "lost" £5000 from their salary. The figures quoted are that at least one person has dropped in salary from £17,000 to £11,000. Now that is a piss-take. I don't work for the council by the way.

Oh I do hope it was the unions acting on behalf of women to get Equal Pay.............. The irony would be delightful.

Binman with a fancy title.
engineer: noun 1 someone who designs, makes, or works with machinery, including electrical equipment. 2 (also civil engineer) someone who designs or constructs roads, railways, bridges, etc. 3 an officer in charge of a ship's engines. 4 N Amer the driver of a locomotive. 5 someone who contrives to bring something about • the engineer of the scheme. 6 a person, especially a member of the armed forces, who designs and builds military apparatus and is trained in construction work.

Source: Chambers Dictionary.

Just checking. "Engineer" rofl I suppose "works with machinery" could make them an engineer. Well, I'll be damned. I'm a software engineer.

I am self employed and not pro union especially, I hated Red Robbo, Scargill etc, and was a big Margaret Thatcher fan, but in this particular case I side with the bin men, if what I have read is true.

Why are the Unions talking about pay rises?

Has the rate of inflation suddenly increased and I didn't notice or something? I mean, what with all of these massive increases in the cost of living, we need to increase wages to public sector workers instantly.

Or have I missed something?

Sounds similar to what happened in Edinburgh recently. Council had to meet sex equality rules and rather than raise female pay, they just cut the male pay to the same level.
