BAe are closing their factory at Woodford. This is the end of an era as Woodford was the old Avro factory where many Lancasters and all the Vulcans were built.

They are also shedding jobs here at Farnborough.

205 to go at Salmesbury and 170 at Warton as well. Both local(ish) to me.

Apparently Farnboroughs shutting/moving and they're having a bit of an airshow/party there on thursday. I don't know any more than that though (well i was told the red arrows and some chinooks as well as other un-named stuff)

BAE and the BBC are saying that 111 jobs will go at Farnborough (due to a decline in Harrier upgrade work). There is no mention of the Farnborough site (which is their admin HQ) closing.

We (and by that i mean probably all UK staff) got emails before lunch with this. From past experiance they will do quite a bit to relocate or offer early retirment to those who want it.

In my 10 years iv not know many people just kicked out as it were by the company.

Damn shame about Woodford, it's been under threat for years but somehow you think it's never going to happen.

Good luck to all there.

1,100 across the board and 111 at Farnborough - that's off their own website.

Its 1116 if we want to be technical.

I'm not going to copy paste from the company intranet for fear of being ass whupped by IT but Woodford's card has been marked since 2003.

Large portions of the site and buildings have already been cleared out as the JSF design work etc completed and really its only Nimrod left and there is not seen to be any future for the site after that. However, that means absolute closure cannot happen until PA12's delivery which means 2012.

What the news doesnt of course report is the subcon culls...

205 going at Samlesbury as the Airbus work subcontracted by Spirit Aero dries up. Dont know how the Airbus orderbook sits with Spirit at Prestwick.

Sad news for all concerned.

I bet that site at Woodford is worth a fair bit.

Nope, still sitting round the back next to the Avro House car park. In one hell of a state though, covered in moss etc. Imagine it'll be sold off before the site is shut.

I'm curious what's being done with the pilot training simulators and all that jazz at the far end of the airfield.

It was due to be broken up. Maybe it will get a stay of execution before the bulldozers move in.

Wonder if whoever buys it will mark the spot where that poor guy died in the Spitfire...

That Spitfire Mk XIVc (G-ALGT / RM689) is being rebuilt to flying condition. Started in 2004, completion date for mid/late next year. Fuselage and tail completed, Griffon installed, wings to complete.

Really?

How? It was a fireball.

If that's correct it's amazing.

A friend of mine works in training there; I think I'll be seeing him at the weekend so I'll try to find out what's happening. They've been very quiet for ages now...

I'm very curious about what's going to happen to the Woodford site. The runway etc would make a great circuit if it weren't for all the houses around it!
