The actual speech

Fallout

t'Article said:
“This is not civics education,” Steve Russell, an Oklahoma state senator, said. “This is something you’d expect to see in North Korea or Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.”
t'Article said:
The address and accompanying talking points were “tools to spread liberal propaganda”, according to Jim Greer, chairman of the Republican Party in Florida, where activists and some parents were advocating a “national skip school day” to avoid exposure to what the President has to say.
A certain Laura Bush said she agreed with the speech...No word yet on how many concerned citizens turned up with loaded assault rifles this time

I started reading the speech got bored started to read the other links, got bored. No idea what their problem is. Aren't they just being their usual stereotypical paranoid selves? Producing a "reading between the lines" conspiracy that doesn't actually exist.

The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president, it should be helping us to produce smarter students.

Well, that is accoring to the Democrat House Majority leader at the time, Dick Gephardt, in response to a 1991 speech made be President Bush that was broadcast from a Northwest Washington junior high school.

I guess Gephardt and his ilk must be a wingnuts too...

If kids fail, they deserve to fail.

The world needs people to pump gas and clean toilets.

The last time the budget was balanced was under Clinton.

"Today you heard from our President, Barack Obama. Some of your parents voted for him, and most of the rest of the country voted for his opponent, John McCain." is incorrect, because iirc half the country didn't cast a vote at all.

Apparently so.

Since the 'Commie Obama wants to kill your Grama' straw man it seems anything he does is to be labeled OMGSOCIALISMWTF and dismissed without rational discussion

Surely it depends on the content of the speech?

Given that it was a broadbrush speech to a very diverse audience, I thought it was a good speech from a decent role model.

I actually think it's a fair enough point to make, but it's worth noting that Bush II also visited schools (remember Sep 11) and it didn't raise a stink at all. It could just be that American politics grew up in that decade, or it could be something else. Probably something else considering the impeachment of Bill Clinton that followed.

That is not fair. While there are some nuts out and about, there is very valid concern with his policies.

Such concern can be expressed in many ways.

IMHO NO politician should EVER be allowed to speak in a school. Education is NOT political indoctrination, but has become that under the present totalitarian socilaist scum.... bad enough that greenextremeists are allowed to tell their lies and quote Gore's lies and scientifically wrong and legally proven bad film.... now lying politicos in schools?
I understand completely why people are against Obamas speach in school (although possibly for the wrong reasons).
NObama, you caaahnt!

Did he not just state that if you wish to get ahead you need an education, was an advocate of studying and basically said you should try in school?

sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Indeed, I really can't see what he did wrong. He wasn't there banging on about how great his administration is, the fuss was about him saying to the kids, if you want to succeed you have to crack and work hard. Saying that most kids won't become celebrities etc. Seems to me that some of that is needed in this country.
