Ban on all alcohol advertising proposed. Madness!

Seems to me that banning advertising will have zero impact. There is no advertising for speed, crack, marijuana, heroin or the rest. The proposal also calls for a tax heist. Thus we will have the entire tax paying population paying for the abuses of a proportion of them. What ever happened to the idea of individual responsibility.?
So, endless CCTV/gatsos/surveillance, with speed limits to walking pace, massive data collection, and now a proposal to suppress a normal part of life in the name of stopping problem drinking.
I wonder what the tolerance will be for the continuation of rule bound, paternalistic, secretive, purse lipped directives for the good of the society. Its nowhere near as good as it was 30 years ago before all this nonsense started.

I think it's a fair enough idea. You can't deny that most alcohol advertising really glamourises it, makes it the cool thing to have. I don't know what age you are, but I'll assume you're not an impressionable teenager... you're probably old enough to realise that chugging Bacardi doesn't make exotic models want to have sex with you.... unfortunately, not all people who will see these ads can distinguish quite so easily between fact and the ideal that the drinks companies want to portray.

That's because those people are stupid. Changing policies for the benefit of stupid people is not a great long term plan. Papa_Hotel said:

Do they though? I thought there were strict ASA guidelines about glamourising alcohol, forbidding the inference that it makes you irresistible to the opposite sex or makes you have a good time - in much the same way that car manufacturers aren't allowed to say their cars go fast.Los Palmas 7 said:

I get your point and it seems it's another case of pandering to the lowest common denominator (ie, thick people) to save them from themselves. Honestly, I fully expect the Government (sic) to issue a leaflet entitled "How To Wipe Your Own Arse" any day now.
Unfortunately, we have to pander to the lowest common denominator on this, they're the ones most likely to get smashed then fill A & E on a Friday night because the sexy bird on the telly told them that if they drank Smirnoff til it came out their nose then she'd suck them off behind the bus shelter.Edited by Papa_Hotel on Tuesday 8th September 15:25

Doctors??!?
They're the ones with the biggest problem.
Doctors??!?
They're the ones with the biggest problem.
Once had a drink with my now retired doctor, had to ask him what sort of beer it was, got the response "ahh that will be the gin I put in to pep it up a bit!"
ETA
Cant see a problem with this ban, why not extend it and ban alcohol full stop, it worked sooooooo well for the americans and you've just got to see how well the fight against drugs is going

The key thing there is "Doctor's Leaders".
There have been several things that a load of my doc chums have not obeyed institutional thinking wise.....I don't think many of them buy into it. They've just got trouble with some bullstters at the top who spend too much time thinking and not enough wking.
The docs I know are largely libertarians and not on some sort of ridiculous, dramatic, ineffective crusade against common sense.
Let's get these Doctor's Heads and poke them with sharp sticks.

Welcome to the world of the Smokers this is how the anti social bks started with us.
Alcohol is up next, damned funny from where I sit.
The next few years is going to be hilarious as us "lepers" can see how this will play out
Limits on the numbers of Drinks you can buy in the Pub, license needed to serve alcohol at your dinner party? No consumption in front of kids, there will be no stopping these guys now they have the drinker in the crosshairs.
I hadn't realised you weren't allowed to smoke at home or in front of children. Must have missed that law coming in...Alcohol is up next, damned funny from where I sit.
