It certainly puts the ban on liquids in to context, that was quite an explosion, comparable to TNT according to the expert yikes

The Government solution to a bomb made from mixing various liquids together was to make passengers pour everything into a big bucket.....

I must admit to being somewhat sceptical of the liquids ban, but after seeing that I have cause to reappraise my views.

Is that video an accurate representation of the bombs these men intended to use?

I'm not saying the way they went about it was correct, but I can see why having watched the video.

The ban on liquids as it currently stands is a completely pointless farce.

Either ban all liquids from hand luggage, or don't bother banning them.

At the moment, all a determined group of terrorists has to do is split their explosive liquids into bottles of 100ml or less, go through security, go to Duty Free, buy a litre bottle of something, take it to the toilets, empty out the original contents and replace with the small bottles of explosive mixture.

OK, so it's a bit more hassle, but if you're willing to blow yourself up to make a point, I can't see that having to decant the liquid is going to stop you?

Couldn't you simply eat a load of explosive and blow yourself up ?

I'm a little sceptical. Obviously that video shows what happens when you set off a 500ml bottle full of TATP. This is clearly what they wanted to achieve and it's quite right that they've been convicted.

As far as credibility of the ban go's I don't think it's quite that simple though; it's very, very sensitive so trying to carry it onto the plane pre mixed would be a huge risk. Mixing it on the plane would be tricky. You have to be very careful (i.e. ice baths to keep the temperature down etc) that a small amount doesn't just explode immediately, before the majority of your precursors have turned into TATP. This would fk the person up mixing it but probably wouldn't cause major damage to the plane.
