I know this is PH so we must all say hang 'em, shot 'em and nuke them from space etc, but I am currently reading law (part time, for something to do on the train) and have just wrote a paper on the Jamie Bulger case comparing it to a very similar event that happened in Norway and how that was handled completly differently (ie not processing them through the adult court system etc) interesting stuff and made and even old cynic like me think.

There has to be a better way and not just locking them up to learn to be better criminals. They will have new identities and the right to "law of confidence" to protect them as the precendent was set with (Venables and Another v News Group Newspapers and others (2001). It very sad all round.

TBH that was never going to stick. Too hard to get a jury to convict and the other offences carry the same ultimate tariff.

Not worth risking the whole case on asking a jury a more difficult question than needed.

I agree with this. Better to give them 15 years for "Assorted naughtyness" than failing to give them 15 years for attempted murder.

Edlington has always been a tough area even in the 70s as a kid from Conisbrough just up the road the kids there liked to fight. But it is worse now, when there was a pit there the men worked and the area was better, once it closed the down ward spiral accelerated. Not everyone is bad there but these two kids were in a family that was broken down morally and these kids will never amount to anything now. How sad that the "nanny state" we all bemoan missed these. And the police clearly knew what the family was like but appear to have not taken action when they knew they had killed animals and committed vandalisum. No wonder people around there gave up
