When the nutters decided to have a pop at our American friends they did it on September 11th. They chose a target that was seen as the financial centre of the country to make a statement. The number of the emergency services there is 911.
It has been a little quiet on the nutter front in recent times, if they wanted to crawl from under their rocks again to do the same thing in this country presumably they would again target a financial centre to make a similar statement, London? The number of the emergency services here is 999.
Next Wednesday is 9/9/09.

Utter balderdash. I'd be amazed if September 11th was chosen for any reason to do with the emergency services number. It was the media who labelled it.

Humans (and especially the tabloid media) love to look for patterns and conspiracies. We don't like things just happening, we feel much more comfortable when there's a reason behind everything. Ref: religion.

And I thought it was all a marketing ploy by Microsoft to get us to adopt the Merkin date format. With now everyone referring to September 11th as 9/11, as opposed to 11/9, it will reduce duplicated code, and make the Windows 7.x code line approximately 3% shorter, along with dropping the letter u from color and humor they will have even more room for annoying features we never use.
The day after the twin towers fell was not the 10th of November."9-11" is a phrase that should be mocked out of the English vernicular.
.. And to answer your question if there's nothing you can do about it, why worry? Fear is a powerful tool of both terrorists and governments. I personally won't give in to either. I'd rather be dead than afraid anyway.
