My kid's school dinners are better than what the NHS serves up.

Not really a surprise. Prison food tends to be cooked on the premises by prisoners and paid cooks using fresh ingredients (some a bit more fresh than others...). A lot of hospital food is shipped in by private contractors from sites miles away.

From memory Carlise hospital gets its food ready cooked and shipped in from Manchester, for example (If I remember rightly).

Please don't take this news to assume the food in prison is anything other than sub-human, though. Which I have no complaints about, by the way.

At Bassetlaw hospital we cooked it all ourselves IIRC. Though it does take a ride round the hospital in the hot locker trolleys, so if you're at the end of the run, then it might be a bit dry.

I spent 4 days in hospital last year and the food was excellent.

Shocked the hell out of me whenever it turned up, but it was very tasty, nutritional, hot, on time, as I ordered, etc... Even the breakfast had toast and tea made in front of me!

Dead happy smile

Yep, I can't complain about hospital food (was basic, admittedly, but sod it, I went to hospital to be fixed, not fed). TBH I dread the day some thug raises his fist and says to me, "You like hospital food?" I might accidentally say, "Yes, it's not bad, actually!"

Are you sure you hadn't by mistake booked into a hotel? Was the actual medical care/surgery very poor? Were they surprised when you asked for a bed bath?

I think so, but I did have to do a few double-takes. The care was absolutely excellent - I went to A&E thinking I might be wasting their time, but they triaged me to the top of the queue where I got seen by a very switched on doctor who made all the right noises and I was their guest in an immaculately clean critical care ward with plentiful and happy staff.

No air conditioning and a rubbish wine list, but as they're the reason I'm still here, able to type drivel on PH, I let them off that smile

I'm aware there may be many who've had awful experiences, but with mine I couldn't be happier - absolutely world class, perfection in every area - including the food - from the first visit through to the follow ups. http://www.queenelizabeth.nhs.uk/

ETA : When I was in there I did see a few other 'guests' who complained of the food and sent wife/daughter/friend out to get something else. These people were all very obese (ie. trouble fitting into a normal car seat). For example, one complained that the staff wouldn't take her outside to smoke and then loudly proclaimed the staff are uncaring and "st", and then that the food was "st" and "she couldn't eat this muck".. so sent her daughter off to get Fanta and a KFC bucket. All the time not realising the reason she was in there was due to this lifestyle! I'm sure these people all remarked to their friends that the hospital food was of poor quality.. but it wasn't - really!
