A World War II veteran suffered severe facial injuries when he was robbed a few hours after scattering his late wife's ashes.

Mr Gibb was hit on the head in an alleyway between Legion Way and West Bracklesham Drive in Chichester.

He had been walking home from his local British Legion club.

Sussex Police has released images of the injuries Mr Gibb suffered in the hope that it will encourage anyone with information to come forward.

His briefcase, which he said contained nothing of value, was taken during the assault.

Mr Gibb has not able to describe the person who attacked him at 2200 BST on 12 August.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: "Mr Gibb was carrying a black leather briefcase with a missing handle and a plastic bag containing a bottle.

"The briefcase has not been found and anyone with knowledge of it is requested to contact the police."

Indeed. Once my father was asked by a Councillor during an election fund raiser what he thought of corporal punishment. He replied "So long as it's between consenting adults I see no problem." smile

It's not the criminals' fault. How were they to know he'd just been scattering his wife's ashes?

because, while he gets to choose his preferred mode of transport, he campaigns to deny others the same right/privelage.

More air miles than Alan Whicker, and yet he lectures us on carbon footprints and flying away on our hols. Everything he's done in the past, which I liked and respected, wiped out in one fell swoop frown

Hypocrite isn't strong enough.

True. A battering with a baby polar bear corpse is in order.

Was St Paul a hypocrite?

Has he done any globetrotting since his "conversion"?

Genuine questions as I wasn't aware he had undergone some transformation into a global warming zealot.

I will never and can never understand why human beings can inflict this sort of beating on a pensioner. He's not only got to deal with the pain and scaring but the mental aftermath will haunt him for the rest of his days. When you're that old and vulnerable fear and worry can be a day to day experience and even more so for the poor bloke as he will be afraid of similar happening again.
I would so much like to be locked in a room with his attackers and given free reign to meet out whatever punishment I saw fit as water boarding in Guantanamo would seem like a blissful release from the pain I would inflict on the scum.

Because mugging and theft never happened in the good old days.

Drama queen.

And what the hell does the ashes scattering have to do with anything anyway?

you're as sick as he is
And what pray tell would you do then? Give them all a tap on the back of the hand and ask them not to do it again.
Lowlife who prey on the weak and old do not deserve fair treatment. They beat the living crap out of an old man, it wasn't just a shove to the ground and nick his bag it was a full on beating.

What's not their fault? That they choose to commit crime?

Your wasting your time, the bleeding hearts are as bad as the scum they defend. There is no concept of crime or punishment in this country anymore. Blair converted crime to economic conributions (after all how would the insurance industy go out without crime). Since then the crims hold their heads up high and regard their activity as as valid as anyone elses. Its time to draw a line in the sand and start the public floggings. We should start though with those who have ruined it for us all. ie the judiciary and the labour cabinet.
