A World War II veteran suffered severe facial injuries when he was robbed a few hours after scattering his late wife's ashes.
Mr Gibb was hit on the head in an alleyway between Legion Way and West Bracklesham Drive in Chichester.
He had been walking home from his local British Legion club.
Sussex Police has released images of the injuries Mr Gibb suffered in the hope that it will encourage anyone with information to come forward.
His briefcase, which he said contained nothing of value, was taken during the assault.
Mr Gibb has not able to describe the person who attacked him at 2200 BST on 12 August.
A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: "Mr Gibb was carrying a black leather briefcase with a missing handle and a plastic bag containing a bottle.
"The briefcase has not been found and anyone with knowledge of it is requested to contact the police."

what has this got to do with corporal punishment?
Indeed. Once my father was asked by a Councillor during an election fund raiser what he thought of corporal punishment. He replied "So long as it's between consenting adults I see no problem." Edited by Mondeohdear on Thursday 20th August 14:09

More air miles than Alan Whicker, and yet he lectures us on carbon footprints and flying away on our hols. Everything he's done in the past, which I liked and respected, wiped out in one fell swoop
Hypocrite isn't strong enough.
True. A battering with a baby polar bear corpse is in order.Hypocrite isn't strong enough.

Was St Paul a hypocrite?Hypocrite isn't strong enough.
Has he done any globetrotting since his "conversion"?
Genuine questions as I wasn't aware he had undergone some transformation into a global warming zealot.
I will never and can never understand why human beings can inflict this sort of beating on a pensioner. He's not only got to deal with the pain and scaring but the mental aftermath will haunt him for the rest of his days. When you're that old and vulnerable fear and worry can be a day to day experience and even more so for the poor bloke as he will be afraid of similar happening again.
I would so much like to be locked in a room with his attackers and given free reign to meet out whatever punishment I saw fit as water boarding in Guantanamo would seem like a blissful release from the pain I would inflict on the scum.

Lowlife who prey on the weak and old do not deserve fair treatment. They beat the living crap out of an old man, it wasn't just a shove to the ground and nick his bag it was a full on beating.
