Expect to see this in a socialist utopia near you soon:

Chicago suspends public services to save cash

bbc said:
Public services in the US city of Chicago have been shut down for a day in an attempt to deal with a $300m (£184m) budget deficit.

Non-essential services such as rubbish collections, libraries and health centres were closed, in the first of three planned Reduced Service days.

City authorities hope the move, with workers taking an enforced unpaid holiday, will save an estimated $8.3m.

They could shut most council run things down for a week a month and we wouldn't notice the difference would we really?

Not if it classed with their annual 'quota' of sick days.

Cancelling rubbish collection? That would work in this country... the bin men could take mondays off... then get paid overtime on saturdays to clear the backlog. wink

Non essential? Rubbish collections? Health centres? These are bloody nearly the only useful things your local council does.

I read that policy as effectively saying to the council workers: we want you to do the same amount of work, but you've got one less day and one day less salary to do it.

Or to cut to the short of it, they're going to pay off the defecit by taking it out of the council employee's wages.

Come to think of it, that's probably not a bad idea. smile

Just one day; everyone will survive. Health centers are not emergency centers.

Merely pointing out that the phrase could have been "Non essential services like pen pushers, planners, diversity facilitators, and all the other public servants who seem to do nothing more than sit around playing with their testicles, are to close." But clearly, to the BBC, these people are essential. Your rubbish collection, however, is optional.

Oops! hehe I was just commenting on our BBC reporter's chosen examples of 'non-essential'. Don't shoot me!

I won't; the only gun I have with me is a single shot, and it has expended its round for the day! biggrin

They are not asking them to, they don't get a choice. Is Illinois a "fire at will" state? I'm guessing it must be..

Essential services probably includes social services, police, fire, courts, education, environmental heath, housing.

Don't underestimate what public services are provided!
