Hi all, I have used the google archive search to find some news stories(daily record). They only go back to 1997, but are filtered through a site called 'Highbeam' research. This appears to be an American money making site where you need to pay $29 a month to read old stories! I couldn't pay anyway as I don't use credit cards - only a debit.

Are there any other sites you guys use, or is there another way to read these?

Thanks

Alan

Its incredibly annoying, I come across it often. Always go to the source first, and check there - many British newspapers don't charge for access to the same articles.

You could also check if such archives are available for free, through your local library. Jstor for instance can be accessed through many educational institutions.

If you really want a good search catalogue, get a library card from Manchester Central Library, and log onto their 24 hour library here:

http://www.manchester.gov.uk/site/scripts/document...

It gives free access to the OED, biographies, and 200 years of The Times archived. For free.

Thanks for that. I'm literally trying everything at the moment to get to the stories which interest me. I'll let you know how I get on.

p.s The Daily Record archive only goes back to 2005, I've just checked.

I strongly recommend the library service - you don't need to apply in person, it'll only take a week or so to get your card.

It really does open up a world of other sources, including this:

http://www.newsbank.com/

If you can't find the stories you want there, you'll probably never find them.
