Very simplistic I'm sure and I realise I'm inviting a good shouting at but it's never occurred to me why we don't just offer to meet hijackers' demands, secure the release of the hostages and then go back and shoot/arrest the hostage takers.

Wouldn't that send a strong message?

If the hijacker is worth their salt, they will incorporate their escape into the demands. e.g. keep 5 hostages, and take them with them on the 747 provided to them with a pilot. Once they land in a non-extradition country, they let the hostages and pilot go, and dissapear, leaving no chance for the BiB to shoot/arrest them.

The only option then is to send in Jack Bauer.

The only strong message is that after the first go - you would be fecked.

The French military have been pretty effective off Somalia dealing with pirates, apart from the poor chap that was killed in one of the last actions.

No a strong message would be to kill the hijackers and the hostages, blowing the plane to pieces in the process.

But thats never going to happen.
