Apologies if it's a repost but it's a story dated today and nothing in NP&E about it today.

Remind me why the poll tax was bad?
As you know it wasn't, it was just a fixed tax per adult resident, but there was a reduction for those with lower household income. Each person was to pay for the services provided in their community. The only reason it was thought to be bad was because the media made it out to be to sell their papers and the great unwashed who usually had big families to get extra benefits thought they would have to paying more. Paying more because they were using more services, more refuse collection and other things seemed a very fair way of doing it over a single home owner.

Shock horror, houses in a nice neighbourhood, with more facilities and a good view are worth more, and have a higher rateable value. If you accept the conjecture that poorer people should pay less, then it surely follows that richer people have to pay proportionately more.
Don't accept. Envyish.Zad said:

They already do - it's called 'the purchase price'. Labour want to tax you (annually, let's not forget) just for having bought a place in a nicer area.Typical Socialist Envy Tax. They really are scrambling for cash, forgetting that we're not bottomless financial pits.

The value of one's house may not reflect how "rich" or otherwise they are.IN any event, why should how much money you make affect how much you should pay to use council services? It may well be the case that those who earn more may use less of the council services, so why should they pay more to get less out?
I bought a house down a quiet street, with a nice view etc.. and that was all reflected in the purchase price. WTF has that got to do with the council tax for use of council services? I live on a private road, so the council don't even pay for repairs to my street.

They do pay less. Less in income tax, less in NI, less in council tax, less in stamp duty when buying, etc etc. Funk said:
