Would have been more fun and useful training if they had put the drug traffickers back in the boat, said "you've got 1min head start" then start shooting. A moving target is better practice

No. They were using the 30mm gun which is intended for shooting small targets, and other small arms. They didn't engage with the main gun.

C) When I read how many shots it took I though the boat was being driven at speed by the trafficers...not bobbing up and down 100 yards away......st shootin.

At a guess this was probably a handy opertunity to practice live firing, might as well make full use of it, pactice the "one shot over the bows" thing ....

This is probably cheaper option that the policing etc necessary if even 1% of those drugs got to the UK streets. Go to root of problem and cut the supply off.
