I grew up watching him every night on CBS evening news, the first TV I can remember is watching him describe the Apollo 11 moon landing followed by many, many reports on Vietnam. His voice is permently engrained in my mind. I miss when news was news and not sensationalism.

"and That's the way it is" Friday, July 17th, 2009, rest in peace Mr. Cronkite, you earned respect from many.

Walter Cronkite is pretty well known over here as well. He was a massively important figure in US TV of the 1960s and 70s. He is best rememberd for three things - the announcement of the passing away of John F Kennedy, his reporting from Vietnam and his anchorman role during the Apollo missions. We have been hearing his voice quite frequently on TV in the UK over the past few days as there have ben quite a few documentaries on the BBC about the first moon landing.

Another great broadcaster leaves us.

Oh god tell me they're not going to play all his old records non-stop on every

I was sittin' home alone one night in L.A.,
Watchin' old Cronkite on the seven o'clock news.
It seems there was an earthquake that
Left nothin' but a Panama hat
And a pair of old Greek shoes.

Even Dylan soundchecked him. RIP, one of the voices of the generation.

When John Glenn went back into space in his 70s, Cronkite did the news coverage for old time sakes. I think he was in his 80s then. smile
