Police dogs die in parked vehicle

Two police dogs have died in a hot vehicle parked outside the headquarters of Nottinghamshire Police.
An RSPCA officer was called to the Sherwood Lodge headquarters in Arnold on Tuesday and found two German shepherd dogs dead.
An independent vet is carrying out post-mortem tests to establish how the animals died.
The incident has been voluntarily referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
'Swiftly reported'
Nottinghamshire's Assistant Chief Constable, Peter Davies, said: "This is a tragic incident and we value the important work our police dogs carry out on a daily basis.
"That is why we swiftly reported this incident to the RSPCA and we will be working with them very closely."
In a statement Nottinghamshire Police said the welfare of all of its animals was "of paramount importance and we endeavour to take every measure possible to ensure their well-being and safety".
The force refused to say what kind of vehicle was involved.
Nottinghamshire vet Andrew Wilson said: "The dehydration would have been a big factor.
"They wouldn't be able to cool themselves because panting wouldn't be effective anymore, there would be no evaporation from the tongue.
"As the core temperature rose as a result of that, and the brain temperature rose, the brain would cease to function and various other organs would fail. This happens certainly within 30 minutes."
A spokesman for the IPCC said the "matter had been referred to them on Tuesday afternoon and they were considering it".

I hope they prosecute them fully!
I think its really bad, if someone kicks a police dog etc i thought they can get done with assulting a pilice officer etc
but the dogs get left alone for what must have been hours for them to die.
As above i thought the handelers got close so would have thought they cared and loved the dogs

Yeah Von better not come up with that b
ks on this one, its simple, in heatwaves dont leave kids or dogs in the car, the tosser who did this should be jailed end of imho. There has to be an investigation, and a trial first. Sorry.

Tragic,
You would like to think that whatever incident the handler was involved in, they could have found a way to get back to the van.
From one reportYou would like to think that whatever incident the handler was involved in, they could have found a way to get back to the van.
".....It is believed the dogs' handler was not on duty at the time and had called in to the force's headquarters at Sherwood Lodge, leaving the dogs to over-heat in the parked car....."

If you know vh, you will know that it is his standard deflection of any potential criticism of the police. He never says "If this is true, then it is appalling and I condemn it, but let's await the outcome of the investigation as there may well be mitigation or an innocent explanation." hope the person(s) responsible get punished to the fullest extent of the law.
Absolutely disgusting that this is happening still, it's not exactly a new discovery that a dog will suffer if left in a hot car. For it to happen to an experienced police dog handler is wholly unacceptable, regardless of the circumstance.

I imagine any plod posting on here have to tread a very fine line between personal opinion and Police impartiality.I am sure the handlers involved used their exemption to put these animals through an agonising death.

I bet the handler responsible is feeling bloody awful about this, my BiL was a dog handler with the RAFP and they develop a very close bond with the animals......ginormous f
k up of some kind happened here I think
I'm sure they are.
k up of some kind happened here I think I'm certain that (from what I know) they look on these dogs as their pets (IIRC many go to live with their handlers once retired).
I'm absolutley positive that if my assumptions above are the case then these Police Dog Handlers feel as bad as the owners who leave their beloved dogs in their cars to die!
What I hope is that, in turn, they are treated the way they would treat the 'mere pet owner', and don't get 'special' treatment because they are Officers of the 'Law'
