... if the council have it's way!

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20090701/tuk-battle-of...

How much truth is in it depends on the spin of the article, and I suspect it isn't as extreme as it suggest. However, what on earth is that council doing with tax money, wasting it on this kind on BS!!

What next, can't have pizza outside of italy? A burger is the preserve of the US? The logic is insane!

If they want to ban certain foods outside of Birmingham, can they also contain that awful droning monstrosity that is 'Brummie'?

What's the big deal (requiring two threads.... wink )

Balti's were the big thing, and have faded away a bit, kinda like masala fish used to be the in thing, now no one knows it.

It might have been moved to food and drink, news and politics, or the midlands regional area.

I would like to restrict use of the word Michael Jackson. I know a michael jackson who comes from a little village in the dales. Therefore it can only be used there.

Isn't the whole point of Birmingham City Council that it deals with what happens in Birmingham?

No it's in The Lounge, double posts there and in the right forums here are ok as it gives them a longer shelf life in here, unlike a Balti.

How is this any different to Melton Mowbray Pork Pies, Arbroath Smokies or (formerly) Newcastle Brown Ale?

Regions/producers can apply to the EU for Protected Geographic Indications to prevent producers outside the area from capitalising on the name. You can still make and eat it outside the region, you just can't use the name. A bit like supermarket own-brand being Cola rather than Coca-Cola.

a curry cooked in a large bucket for mass consumption (weddings, restraunts, construction sites etc..)is the origin of the dish that is called balti...How in the world are these nutters going to patent a curry cooked in a bucket? its just another PR stunt to get people saying the authentic balti dishes come from B'ham...and increase business.
