You don't have to have one but we'll make your life as difficult as possible if you don't

Don't worry - the ID Card Bill is practically dead. These are just the thrashings of a wounded and dying beast.

A passport is utterly voluntary.

A complete U-Turn if ever I saw one - they can't even get the airport workers to stump up for one.

Another colossal waste of money foisted upon us in the name of 'national security'. Hopefully cameron will use this in PMQ's tomorrow, it's nothing short of a scandal - what's been delivered, how much has been paid and to whom?

At which point anyone declining an ID card is a terrorist suspect, their NIR entry is immediately flagged and they get ANPR'd every three seconds whilst going about their pefectly legitimate business. Brave new world.

There's a vile poster on the Tube showing a picture of a high street and some CCTV cameras with words to the effect of "Last week, a bomb didn't go off here because a camera operator noticed someone acting suspiciously". That chills me to the bone.

Don't worry, Tories said they'll scrap it.

Why can't they just admit it was a bad idea.

What annoys me is if they go ahead with this they're still going to have to implement the whole ID card infrastructure at a cost of ££billions. £5.4billion in 2007. Does anyone have recent figures? What an utter waste of money.

They've already invested £20million in the scheme before it's even been started. (that's half a royal family that is! wink )

A voluntary card that will cost each individual £30 for the pleasure. I read today that 3500 people had already signed up!! party

Makes it all seem worthwhile doesn't it? rolleyes

They are the Labour Party and as such are perfect. They do not make mistakes. Everything they do is correct and works wonderfully. I know this, because they tell me so.

Clearly seems like a pointless exercise now, make it voluntary and for migrant workers. Hardly justifies the expense, and the whole thing should be st canned.

However I reckon the mistake you're making is not recognising the long game. Having discovered its currently a vote loser. Put the infastructure in place to have id cards, and then wait for current events to provide the fertile soil upon which the imposition of id cards can later be pushed through, with the acquiescence, of the general populace.

Just need to wait for a major terror atrocity in the UK and they'll try again (Labour & probably Tories).

So given ID cards were a matter of national security I take it we are all going to be killed by a dirty bomb now?

Why can't they just admit that they got it wrong? tts

The perpetrators of both 9/11 and the Madrid train bombings held valid ID cards for the countries where they murdered the foreign 'infidel'.

That fact alone destroys this incompetent government's argument for them.

At least that great champion of Nazi style ID, Jackie Smith, is no longer home secretary.. and I for one am happy that I am not now contributing to her husband's porn collection or her sister's 2 up-2 down.

No change, this announcement is nothing but spin.

The card has always been voluntary, at least without further legislation. Registration on the National Identity Register, which is the truely dangerous part, will remain compulsory if you want a passport, or any other document they choose to designate.

Just an attempt to appear to be listening, without actually changing anything. It is the NIR database which is the problem, not a plastic card. That is merely a symbol.

"Mr Terrorist do you want to sign up for an id card?"
"Yes, please, then I can continue with my dastardly plans, and you can use my id. card to identify my remains while I enjoy myself in paradise."

A passport is voluntary, it's just that you can't really do much without one.
