I think his lawyer's prospects just went out of the window...
Did he try the "chewbacca" defence or something?

There was another case recently that was 75 plus years. The lawyer stated to the judge that his client was elderly and not likely to live that long. The judge replied by saying: "Just tell him to do as many as he can".
LOLNow, I am not a conspiracy loon.
However, a few Jewish friends of mine seem to believe the following take on Madoff: (it does seem a little altruistic and far fetched to me!).
Madoff's main investors were Jewish. He lost them a lot of money.
By admitting charges of fraud, or whatever, these investors had a chance to get their money back through some insurance scheme or something. So he took one for the "team".
They all seem to think he was simply a bad investor and that this is all a scam to reclaim some Jewish cash.
As I said, seems more than a tad implausible to me.

There is no coverall insurance scheme for the fraud he committed. Those investors whose money ended up in his hands via a third party may be able to recover funds through the liability insurance of their brokers, otherwise any return of funds will come from a fire sale of Madoff's assets, that is unless the money that was misappropriated can be tracked down using forensic accounting..
