I am trying to make sense of an overpayment, and subsequent recoupment, made by a government body concerned with administering legal aid. Said body insists that there is a £2 billion cap on the budget and most solicitors haven't seen a rise in rates for years. Anyway, said individual sent me her March and April payslips. In 2008/09 she was paid just over £52K and the pension contribution made by her employer was £15K.

Seems a lot to me.................

Aye. That is knocking on 29% of salary.

More than likely the contributions were made by salary sacrifice. This would show the employee contributions as employer contributions so the amount shown would be employee and employer.
