just seems like a waste of time resisting because whoever gets in power will just end up doing the same to keep power, how can they ever have freedom with religious rule...

I think that is the subtle key here. It is not who is in, it is the struggle. If the opposition gets their man in, they will likely be disappointed as things will probably remain the same. However, the longer the struggle itself goes on, the more angry the protestors will become with the Islamic foundation itself....then real change has a chance.
