"THE Ministry of Defence intends to cut army manpower to its lowest level since the Crimean war.

Plans to axe three infantry battalions – a total of 1,800 men – are being discussed despite the overstretch caused by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This would see the size of the army drop below 100,000 for the first time since the 1850s."

Winky is worried about a collapse of government and imminent military coup leaving only him and Margaret Beckett holed up in the commons lobby like Butch & Sundance with the Army outside. So by cutting numbers it means they wouldn't have enough manpower available to do anything about it.

I'm thinking too much about that aren't I?

They'd have to cut the army down a hell of a long way before they couldn't take out 300 and blob labour suit wearers.

Agreed. But I don't see how this can be reconciled with our purchase of two fkoff big aircraft carriers. Even if we have a military, it will be useless unless we have the political clout to go with it, which we dont have these days and wont have if our economy is in the toilet.

This will further fuel the Crab / Jack / Pongo wars in the MOD and will allow ZNL to create greater disunity amongst the Chiefs of Staff.

It should never have been allowed to descend into "My three battalions are worth more than your carrier of their jets" bun fight.

We need all of it, unless we re-role into Home Defence Force status and a constituent part of a United European Armed Forces for expeditionary ops.

Ahh........ Lord Peter will be one step nearer to being made Prince Regent of Europia whilst his 'close friend' Anthony Charles is made Arch Duke, El Presidente and Chief Wizard.

More joined up thinking from the wonderful world of gubberment. Haven't they been saying recently that the armed forces are now at full strength for the first time in ages as a lot have been joining up to avoid unemployment?
