Im not belittling Nick Faldo or Chris Hoy's achievements. But a knighthood? Can anyone remember Faldo's performance in front of the press before the Ryder Cup last year?

Sir Chris Hoy - really? Isnt that a bit like giving idiot Flintoff (fine - Chris is no idiot) et al an OBE or MBE after one ashes series, only to have them go on to achieve excatly nothing? I bet Lewis Hamilton is a bit miffed he didnt get the nod!?

Are there so few people doing truly noble things, that we've dilute the selection criteria? Thats the only reason I can think of.

I agree, there does seem to be a bit of lowering on the criteria front for one of these 'awards'.

It may be that Lewis Hamilton is ex directory in Switzerland so they couldn't contact him, but he will get one next time.

I always wonder what the ratio is... it appears every time that sports people are over awarded. Is there a significant element of playing to the public popularity appeal or do we just not hear about the hundreds of other deserving cases?

Faldo is Britains most successful golfer. He's also disliked by most people in golf and comes across as a fairly unpleasant self satisfied arse. Sir Nick? Bit of a joke but then we also have SurAlan, Sir Cliff and Sir fking Elton so what do we expect.

Harold Wilson basically devalued the whole honours system when he handed out gongs to the Beatles and started the celebrity honours bandwagon. The whole system is now completely devalued and pointless. In an attempt to gain populist approval Bliar gave MBE's to all members of the 2005 ashes winning cricket team. So Paul Collingwood got an MBE for scoring 8 runs. So to get an MBE you need to turn up at a cricket ground and score 8 runs. Joke.

No, but I do remember him winning six Majors.

I think if a British tennis player won six grand slams he would get a Knighthood.

Could somebody please throw one of these cornflake packets in the direction of Prof Sid Watkins, a staggeringly deserving recipient of a knighthood for services to queen country and motorsport if ever there was one

Sorry, but IMO Fred Perry has a lot to answer for - vandalism, antisocial behaviour, drunkedness, and teenage pregnancy are just a few of them. wobble

Boy 'sacrifices' most of his youth to doing what most boys would dream of doing for a day!! Gets paid millions to drive the best car in the field agressivley, and is revered as the best of British. Gets MBE for his 'sacrifices' but moves to a tax haven so he does not have to plough some of his wealth back into blighty, where you and me have no choice. That says it all about this now corrupt system, don't start me on Mandy!!!!

Is Stephen Hawking a Sir? If not he should be, he's done a lot for science over the years despite being disabled, and getting more disabled over time as is the nature of the disease.

Just a CBE. Not enough mass appeal for a K under labour. Simon Cowell will get one first.

Nick Faldo..

Totally deserved IMO.

Not only the best British Golfer of the modern era, a true dedicated sports professional etc etc..

But also a person who has put an awful lot back into the games development, with the Golf Foundation and youth development. Bringing on young golfers from all walks of life, giving them the equipment, sponsorship and support that true talent deserves.

Because he doesn't like or respect the press, they don't report or bother with him, the good as well as the bad.

Admittedly he is a oaf when it comes to his public speaking.. But, he has been working with Americans for the last few years.. smile

Yep, crap on the wife, dump her for a younger model, get a knighthood for it, normal acceptable behaviour and labour policy.

In order to pander to the aspirations of their supporters, Labour introduced the target of University degrees for 50% of the population, ignoring the fact that there was no possibility of the national job market requiring that many graduates.

In order to meet their own target, the standard of Degrees had to be dumbed down, and the corresponding admission requirement qualifications accordingly.

If we hadn’t reduced the standard of Secondary education accordingly, we would have the situation that students would arrive at University with a more advanced qualification than the dumbed down degree.

We should therefore be unsurprised if they introduce new standards allowing Honours for all, recognising such achievements as ‘Services to Benefit claiming’ or ‘a lifetime of achievement in the field of single motherhood’.
