I attach floats to all of my missle stash to avoid just such a thing.

I'm assuming it an AGM?

The fisherman had some balls, i would have got the hell away from that as soon as i possibly could.

If he sacrificed cold beer to keep from exploding he isn't a fisherman!

They hauled the missile in a few miles up the beach from here. He's been on the tv and to say he came across as a bit of an idiot would be being kind. He wanted to keep it as a souvenir and thought it was safe because it had a hole in it, but they took it away and blew it up today at mac dill AFB, apparently he snagged another but he didn't like the look of that one!

You would think that in the event you noticed a rather large device which was designed to explode on the end of your line, you'd call the authorities and stay right out of the way....

That is assuming that your dining room still exists after attempting to mount a high explosive device to a wall....

During trials at AUTEC in the Bahama's they lose Torpedoes all the time and actually pay a handsome fee to any fisherman that return them. I think it's about $5000.

Are they Live Torps?

Is it made clear to the fishermen that they are not live?

That's a risk i am willing to take for the man points of catching a missle. Infact i would probably claime that i plucket it out of the air with my net, licked my fingers and extinguished the burner and stuck it up next to some moose and deer heads.

I thought it was only a test missle so no explosive charge?

Hiya, they were TVT's (Test Variant Torpedoes), they don't have a main warhead, but there are other explosives in weapons to make certain things happen, but by the time the weapon has completed it's run all these are expended. The main one in these is a small explosive used to inflate the collar which floats the weapon for recovery, sometimes these may not have gone off, hence they're dredged up by fisherman. Generally modern weapons are fairly safe though, they tend not to go up randomly.

While watching Trawlermen one of the fishermen on there found a small torpedo. They eventually decided it was safe as it was full of water...

If it WAS "full" of water it had been down there for a long time, but these guys do need to be a bit careful, in the Torpedoes I worked on they had salt water activated batteries, so the battery section would flood, but the rest wouldn't, it'd be difficult to know if the whole this was full of water or not. But as I said earlier, they're fairly safe really.

In the pic it looks like a recent variant sidewinder. Length is given is '8 foot', sidewinder is about 9 and a bit, so could be.
In the pic it look like a narrow body missile, so likely air to air.

The BBC refers to it as a "live" missile - Pics here:
