methinks this could be a "care in the community" case. Very sad.

I was thinking something along them lines too. But, you have to be careful what you say nowadays, wouldn't want to offend a mentalist!

Blimey, it gets worse!

Seriously, how can scum like this be allowed to walk the streets?

I know we cannot blame this on our brilliantly clued-up government yet, but if this turns out to be another social services related blunder then it really does take the piss!

If that was my other half I dread to think what I would want to do to that cowardly bd!

Yes but if the poor indivdual that did it was suffering mental illness we should hug him and make sure he is ok before punishing him because we don't want to make things worse do we.

Of course the alternative solution of harsh punishment for small crimes and unpleasant death for bad ones might make a few more people think about what they are doing.

Problem is that the punishment handed to you would be much harsher for seeking revenge than on him for his crime.

The country is broken and something extreme that will upset a lot of bleating liberals needs doing before we end up losing all of our good people overseas.

I agree but await the bleeding hearts to tell us that it'll simply turn us into a nation of legalised barbarians (or something along those lines).

I'd rather we had a justice system first before we start talking about the death penalty

Ditto, it'll never happen as its enshrined in European treaties etc.

Even if it did we would have to be very certain that those convicted of such crimes were the actual perpetrators. This should be easier now with advances in forensic sciences but we would not want another raft of mis-carriages of justice - Guildford Four, Birmingham Six amongst others - would we ?

Quite. And bear in mind that the US has the death penalty and a worse violent crime rate than we do, so it's hardly a ringing endorsement.

It's OK foks. A national ID card scheme is coming which will keep us all safe.

That is the key point.

Our justice system is beyond being a joke; innocent people actually die as a result of its failure.

Irrelevant MS. US has a very different social model. Such evidence as there is would seem to suggest that the Death Penalty in the UK would significantly lower the murder rate.

Yes i am willing to bet that if you actually had a proper punishment for assault instead of ten minutes of sitting on the naughty step would have a MUCH bigger effect

I'm guessing that most people in this thread didn't know Claire. I did. It's a tragedy.

It's also a shame that morons keep jumping on the band wagon and thinking that the death penalty will be a deterrent to people with severe mental health problems.

I've always wondered about that, clearly if you kill someone you aren't in a right state of mind, the act of murder is pretty self evident of this. At what stage does a mental health issue become a defence to the accusation of murder? And why for that matter? Who decides which conditions qualify for consideration and which don't?

Just wondering aloud really.

If you and me had a fight and I killed you I probably wouldn't be able to claim insanity as I'm not. It becomes a defence when the person doing it is insane. Doctors decide which conditions qualify for consideration.
