So...Lord Peter (should that be Goat Peter?) gets into the position of Lord High Nonny Nonny and then starts to take the Son o' the Manse up the garden path.

You do have to wonder why Mandelson backed GB on Friday... what is he looking to achieve from this crisis?

this is why, like Cameron, I want to see Brown stay until the election. His presence will result in Labour being utterly routed and I want to see him broken. I think I'll go to Downing Street the morning after the election to see him go and to laugh at him.

I reckon he's been eying the top job for quite some time; he's a canny bugger, don't underestimate his ambition or deviousness.

But he would never have enough support from the Party to challenge for the top job? He couldn't enter any leadership contest anyway could he given he is not an MP?

Even if he got the job- what would he do with it? He'd be like William Hague in 98.
