I've often previously had the, somewhat sweeping, opinion that anyone who wants to be an MP really shouldn't be allowed.

Based on David Cameron's comments recently ( link), this now seems like a good time to get involved.

I'm not politically motivated, however this might actually make me a good candidate? This might sound strange but as a person who doesn't wish to gain financially or have any other political motives, I think I'd be quite good at it... at least better than the current examples.

So, just how straightforward is it? Forgive my lack of understanding, as I said I've never had the inclination to do this previously.

  • If I live in a predominantly Labour area is it even worth the bother of campaigning to become a Conservative representative i.e. with no chance of becoming an MP, or could I simply run for another area?
  • If there is another candidate then will I just be refused?
Any other considerations? I've Googled it but there doesn't seem to be anything clear and concise which answers my questions.

Are you planning on being a Conservative?

If so you need to kiss ass to everyone else who is a Conservative, so you can be the local candidate.

However, if it is felt someone important needs a seat. Then they could be shuffled to your constituency, if there is a greater chance of them getting in there.

so basically you need to kiss ass.

Well I'd normally vote Conservative so that was my first instinct. Normally I wouldn't get involved due to all the ass kissing, but if there was some sort of reform in politics which made it easier then I'd consider grasping the opportunity, purely because I think I could do a better job.

Ass kissing however, is not my forte and if it required this or any other brown-nosing then I'd not really be interested.

Go on, do it anyway. Worst that can happen is that there's one less ass kisser in there.

Out of interest, say the majority is the opposite party to one whom you support, why not join anyway and change them from within?

Personally, I don't trust any of them, so I'm really on the fence. nuts

Mine?
1) Workhouses for the unemployed; their services will be rented out to the private sector, eg salt mining companies
2) Chav-fuelled power stations for the unemployable (read: those that refuse to work).
3) Child tax. You want 15 children? You pay 15x the tax. Have fun.
4) Sterilisation pills in the water system.
5) Corporal punishment for criminals plus they have to work to earn money for the victim either in normal employment or the government-sponsored workhouses.
6) Free education to degree level for all, no Mickey Mouse degrees permitted. (Vocational training for those who prefer the more hands-on jobs.)
7) Free NHS.
8) Fair deal for road users. Tax via petrol only. The more you use the roads, the more you pay.
9) Lots of reversals of stuff that the current government have put in eg smoking ban changed to opt-in businesses.

I'm sure some stuff needs minor tweaking but that'll do. tongue out

Before that, you need to get your name on the Conservative's Approved Candidate list. Bit like an extended job interview, you have to go and attend a day-long assessment centre (costs £250) etc.

So I should pay extra tax on the children I support entirely from my own income (soon to be taxed at 50%), who are/will be privately educated and were born in the private wing of an NHS hospital (thus providing extra funding to the NHS) and who will most likely grow up to contribute massive amounts in tax themselves? fk that!

One thing to add, as suggested by George Bernard Shaw.

“We should all be obliged to appear before a board every five years and justify our existence...on pain of liquidation.”

I think you have to suck up to the machine so much to get through a selection committee that you become part of the problem.

You can stand as an inderpendant , it'll cost you and your probably going to loose your deposit unless you get a lot of support. That way though you keep your principles.

UK (as most countries) isnt set up for anything other than a party system.

Well I've enquirer as to who is the regional director as I have to contact them (thanks v8mate) to send a CV. I imagine it'll all amount to nothing, but what's the point of moaning about the system without at least trying to do something about.

Absolutely!! We need more of this kind of attitude. Personally, I would do something but being an MP isn't my kind of personality.
