Ford and Honda have withdrawn temporarily from the car scrappage scheme due to confusion over VAT treatment of the £2,000 Trade In amount being allowed on scrappage cars.

A government minister has told the car industry to sort it out themselves - which is rather rude of him seeing as how the problem is caused by the complexity of government imposed VAT legislation.

(A pure guess) but I daresay the manufacturers will want VAT to be applicable to the post-scrappage price and HMRC on the pre-.

What a shock, something else they've got spectacularly wrong.

And they STILL claim they could make above minimum wage in the real world.

Story here

With the average car costing £10k, the government will recoup £1,500 VAT on the new vehicle for thier £1,000 contribution, as Mandelson said 'its a win, win' wink

Some Hyundai saleman was on the radio saying that `visitors` (not `customers`) to his showroom were up 400% due to the scrappage scheme. I presume that means 4 rather than 1 sheltered from the rain last week, or maybe they are particularly discerning & want a car they can scrap after maybe 5 years next time?

I don't care if a new Fiat Chinkychunky 'EcoGreen' edition is free; I'm still not having one.

However I suspect my taxes will be paying for the muppets that sign up...

I heard on teh radio this a.m. some greeno proclaiming that in order for a new-for-old car purchase to make sense environmentally, the scrapper would have to be circa 19 years old (majority of eco-probs occur during production rather than use). So if you are driving an older car, well done; you are helping save the planet smile as opposed to the commonly held view that you're an eco-raper...

According to a main dealer near me, the only cars they are seeing from people wanting to use this scheme are nice, well maintained, perfectly serviceable vehicles from people who are comfortably off taking advantage of the offer.

All the old bangers that are unroadworthy and polluting will stay on the road beacause the owners of these have no money to buy a new car.

I find this impossible to believe.

It would mean that they haven't completely failed at absolutely everything they have done.
