God save the Queen, or King.

A method of finishing a public address by elder statesmen, high ranking clergy, and middle ranking and upwards military types since before the rise of the Empire.

However, with the exception of one or two addresses made to troops on the eve of battle in the Middle East, I cannot recall it ever being said in my lifetime.

Anyone have any ideas or theories on when it stopped being the done thing to finish a speech or address with?

I heard it last year.

Mind you, that was having lunch in the Long Room at Lords in the presence of John Major.....

I attend a few functions where the Queen is toasted (a nice golden brown).

Hmmm, so it's still in use in the more closed social circles.

I just wondered when the last time it was said at the end of an address by the PM, or the Defence Minister (or much better titled Minister for War)

Do you mean someone said "God save the Queen, or King" because John Major was there?

No, it was a pre-dinner toast surrounded by lots of ex-cricketers and MCC members, he was just another guest.

I've certainly not heard it anywhere else.

You had a pre dinner toast at lunch? How irregular.

The usual toast is just "The Queen" and it comes after dinner and gentlemen may smoke only after the toast has been given.

That being the first and last time eating at Lords, I couldn't comment.

It may have been the two bottles of wine I'd consumed that makes my head a bit fuzzy....

And the only person smoking in the Long Room is the portrait of Beefy smile

I think God Save The Queen, is probably more common in use by people of a miltary background, what with the convenant between the armed forces and the state, I think they pledge their allegiance to the Queen, when taking her shilling, as she is the embodiment of the state/country, and your retired officer class rolling up in the long room in the MCC, etc, etc.

Also its not in wider use, say in your local comprehensive, as this country attempts to be secular (i.e. removing God from the class room, it might even cause offence mentioning The God in the same sentence as QE2, in some of minority religons, and hell then there's those lefty teachers) and also many would struggle to see the Queen as a constitutional monarch, as the embodiment of the state, in the same as Americans see their flag as the same symbol of their constitution and republic. Their education system is even more secular, thats why they get so upset when their flag gets burned, as essentially it symbolically represents burning the constitution and the country down, while we'd probably not get that vexed about the flag, but if some little corporal burned our Liz at the stake, as an assault on every one of us and the nation, we'd probably dust off a nuke and lob it at them.

I suspect if we ever get a bill rights or a republic, we too will pledge allegiance to the flag as the state.

If anyone wants to correct my potted history of our state or country cousins please do, as mine is born of thorough knowledge Ladybird knowledge books circa 1976.

Depends on how much alcohol is consumed.
