Not sure what a "prope" is though.

Prope into attacks on 4 x4's
May 13, 2009

POLICE are hunting a radical environmental activist after a series of attacks on gas-guzzling 4x4 vehicles.

Each of the vehicles, also known as Chelsea Tractors, either had their tyres slashed or let down.

And on every vehicle, all damaged in areas of south Manchester, a note was left saying they had been targeted because 'they contribute to climate change'.

Owners of such cars have been branded irresponsible by environmentalists, for their vehicle's size and fuel consumption.

Critics say the large four-wheel drive vehicles were originally intended for use by farmers on rough terrain in the countryside.

But they have become popular with middle-class families living in cities and are used for school runs and shopping trips.

Two separate attacks have now taken place in Manchester in less than a month.

Tyres on 20 cars were slashed or let down overnight in the Ladybarn and Withington areas of the city.

Overnight on Thursday April 23, the tyres on 11 cars were also slashed or let down in Ladybarn, Withington and Didsbury. All the areas are also popular with students.

On both occasions, notes left on all the cars were addressed 'Dear road user', and blamed the vehicles for climate change.

They went on to say such large vehicles were responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, intimidated other road users and pedestrians, and used oil which was the cause of wars.

They ended by saying the 'attack' was not on the owner, but on their choice of car.

Detective Inspector Damian Moran, from Greater Manchester Police, said: "Those responsible might believe they are making a point, but this behaviour is criminal.

"It is mindless vandalism with no regard for the distress and nuisance caused to decent members of our community and will not be tolerated.

"If anyone knows anything or has seen anything suspicious during those two nights that might help us catch those responsible, please contact me."

I think you will find that "prope" should be "Probe" smile

Vigilante groups of this nature are a result of the segregated road users, that has been created over recent years.

Eco-nutter claims the attack was not on the owner.

shout BcensoredS! Damage a 4x4, it must then be repaired. Owner pays for repairs. So therefore attack IS on the owner.

wavey...hiya, Claire

You might be right...

I'd also hazard a little bet there's a lot of envy driving things as well...

Not to mention the old loony left, now dressed up in green clothes.

When I take over, they will quickly realise the error of their ways...

Not long now...smile

Hi & TY smile for the Welcome.

You may well be right about envy too, although that might have been how (some) of the concept to take action, started, but for this action, surely this has to have been planned and well thought out.
Slashing tyres I understand is extremely tough !
The distaste felt, must have been building for some time prior to this action. It is very extreme.
I am not sure that envy alone would be enough from a psychological point of view, to result in this vandalism on another persons private property.

You're from abroad aren't you?

Environmentalism is a peculiar Western outlook/disorder/disease. Unfortunately it is spreading throughout society. The rest of the World must think we're mad.

Even if you believe in this new nonsensical green religion targeting 4x4s doesn't make sense.

  • Mankind's contribution to the short-term carbon cycle via CO2 emissions 3%
  • UK contribution to global emissions 2%
  • Contribution to UK emissions from cars 16%
  • Sales of cars that are 4x4 8%
  • CONCLUSION is that UK 4x4s contribute 0.0007% to a non-existent non-problem.
Data above from IPCC, DEFRA and SMMT.

More from SMMT, but the sales figures are recent not current:

4x4 facts
• Sport utility and 4x4 vehicles make up 7.7 percent of new-car sales in the UK. That compares to 30 percent for superminis and 31 percent for small family cars.
• The average CO2 emissions from a 4x4 or SUV is 12 percent less than that of a luxury saloons and about the same as a sports car.
• Average new 4x4/SUV emissions have fallen by more than 17 percent in the last six years while the general drop is about 11 percent.
• Each of the three best-selling SUV in the UK - Land Rover Freelander, Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V - is shorter than a Ford Mondeo.
• Despite pressure-group claims, there is no verifiable research that shows European 4x4's and SUV's are less safe than other types of vehicle.

It's envy-red socialism dressed up in green clothes. Buildings emit more carbon dioxide than the entire transport sector, do these muppets live in a tent, tree or cave? Or attack houses?

After the jail term has been served they should recycle the idiots responsible for this - they might appear with a brain next time and buy a decent V8.

That's ignoring the fact that a couple of dozen people have just had to needlessly increase their carbon footprint (hurl) by 4 large tyres each and 4 tyres each have made their way to a land fill. Nice one hippies!

And then there are all the extra miles that everyone in the local community have to do, like the Police, insurers (maybe) and Tyre Mobile Assistance to help replaced the damaged tyres. All the costs to the motorists and the extra difficutites they may have encountered, because of their actions, plus all the ongoing resulting consequences too.
It disturbs me to, to think that IF this was anything to do with local students, that they are so indoctrinated that they felt so compelled to act in this repulsive manner. What are we teaching our kids? Is Politics so buried in all the lessons that children are now, puppets to the Politicians ?

What if someone hadn't noticed a slightly flat tyre, (they should notice of course), and driven, the consequences of this potentially dangerous & criminal action, may have continued and may have resulted in an accident, and then all the problems, that would then have caused everyone !

I hate to say this as I'm incensed about the lack of proper info regarding the environment as anyone but tyres are actualy recovered and recycled well in most developed counties.

They are shredded into large chunks and then cryongenicaly treated, shattered into tiny bits, the steel and fabric removed (both are also recycled) and then different grades and sizes of rubber beads or dust is the end product. It has many industrial and commercial usages - running tracks, interlock tiles for paving, playground matting are but a few uses, but my favourite - used as additives for road surfaces. Increases grip, reduces noise and allows the road surface to expand and contract from varying temperatures with far less cracking. Often used in race track surfacing smile

Anyway - There are some people that 'have' to have a cause and the government have given them the perfect excuse through bad science and simple disinformation as it suits their agenda.

Tree hugger? Me? Nah... Have a 4x4 for work and a Porsche for weekends and track days, and as Turbo as pointed out - I'm (we're) not the problem - if there is a problem...

Well, it was picked-up by the news and people are talking about it so I guess they achieved their aim.

There is no excuse for criminal damage though.

Personally I dislike SUV's not for their carbon footprint but for their sheer size; difficult to see past, take up too much room in a car park/narrow road and I certainly wouldn't like to be in collision with one in my two-seater.

yeah, those RAV4s are enormous, take up loads of room, much bigger, than, say, an Audi A6

Anyone who knows the area around Manchester University will know that the Oxford Rd (main road into town) is usually nose to tail with buses, many of them knackered old double-deck 'magic buses' that are only there to shuttle students between the city centre and the university. How would our little revolutionaries cope with them?
