This is clearly the last thing the public finances need right now.

I just hope the government have thought this through properly and this "village" will be suitable for sale afterwards.

Londoners, what is your take on this from a local point of view, i.e. will people want to live there?

The scariest aspect of this whole Olympics shindig is the fact that old Tess is running the show. We will be the laughing stock of the whole world if we manage to mess this one up.

In general, I broadly support the London Olympics and am excited already by the prospect of going along. An Olympic 100m final is a must see for any true sports fan.

As an aside, does anyone know if the British Olympic Committee have decided to admit any new sports this time round?

Unlikely. Despite the rhetoric, the accomodation needs of 10,000 young athletes are not a good match for the general population.

If there is enough 'carbon bks' involved to rule out car parks I can see the sports facilities going to waste too.

I don't think it is quite none at all; our Glorious Leaders Corrupt stheads will expect to be chauffeur driven there on specially closed ZIL lanes (more fun for the rest of us). But it could easily be so few that much of the population cannot access the gold-plated facilities.

Look at e.g. Greece- if you try to photograph the abandoned facilities there the police will point guns at you. frown

Here? Half of it is to go as 'affordable housing', so it'll be a slum within a decade.

Not sure about there; I was under the impression that it had been fenced off in it's entirety.

In the original bid documents the cost was 2.3 billion.
Currently it stands at 9.325 billion.
Someone I know who has studied the project in depth reckons it will end up at 15 billion.

And how much would it cost to bring Silverstone up to standard?

I heard Seb Coe on the radio last week saying it was a myth that the Olympics were over budget.

I believe him.

yes I do too. He's just a tad unobservant. In fact, I bet he only knows when he has run out of toilet tissue when he has a handful of st.

The Olympics will not go over budget. The figures will be manipulated to prove this, however, there may well be a separate budget for regeneration, renewal, improvements etc. which will exactly cancel out the alleged overspend.

It's not the bill we should be worried about

What about traffic and actually getting to the events.

I can't get through London in less that 2 hours these day.

Imagine all those tourists craming onto our third world transport systems or trying to drive through London.

It can't cope now, what will happen when you add a few million Olympic fans.

The Olympic committee must have been mad to award it to the the third world country that has become the UK.

They'd have been better awarding it to more developed country like Kenya.

How about we make the other half "Grace and favour" accommodation for our MPs? Or at least the next set of MPs after this lot are ousted.

I love the idea of 'grace and favour' second homes for our (say, outside M25) MPs, but if you think this bunch of s would accept homes in East London you are dreaming.

Accept? I wasn't of the opinion that they were going to be offered biggrin

Nice idea. But the way our so-called democracy is set up, it is them who have to agree the system. We'd need a few swinging from lamp-posts before they'd set up an honest system.

Not that I think that would be a bad thing.

and chuck in a few random security alerts to add mayhem to chaos. All sorts will come out of the woodwork to damage this event.
